Being Prepared For Clogged Drains
If your sink is blocked, try using a sink plunger. If that doesn't clear the clog, try using a drain-and-trap auger to clear the clog through the drain, then through the cleanout, and lastly through the drainpipe. If your toilet is blocked, try using a toilet plunger. If that doesn't clear the clog, try using a toilet auger. Tub drains and shower drains can also be cleared of clogs by using a drain-and-trap auger...continue reading

Facts About Mold Inspection: How To
Prevent and Repair Mold Contamination

Mold can be found in the air, on the ground, and both inside and outside of your home, and some types of mold can cause harmful health effects that can range from mild allergy symptoms to serious and even life threatening illnesses. A mold inspection can alert you to the fact that your home has mold contamination, and testing can determine exactly what types of mold are present so that the proper cleanup or remediation procedures are used...continue reading

Progressive Leaks and Moisture Create Mold Hazards
Mold develops from increased moisture levels in your home that can be caused by a number of factors: a leak under a sink or toilet, behind a dishwasher or refrigerator or in a bathroom. All of these are caused by general use such as cooking, heating, cooling or showering which are everyday occurrences. As the leaks progress, it creates bacterial growth which does not necessarily become toxic but can cause musty odors and aggravate...continue reading

Plumbing Tips For Everyone
A pipe in your basement is leaking and the puddle is growing larger by the minute. Try not to panic. Turn off the main water supply (usually found in the basement or crawl space) and clean around the leak. Cut a small length of garden hose, wrapping it around the pipe and using two hose clamps, bind the hose around the pipe as tightly as possible. Your basement pipes are showing signs of cold water pipe condensation causing you to worry about mold...continue reading

The Plumbing In Your Home and Moisture
Here you'll need to check around the sink and faucets for leaking. Remember that moisture that accumulates under a sink presents an inviting home for some nasty pests like roaches which flourish where ever there is moisture. You should also check the faucets to make sure that they shut off completely and don't drip at all.  It's also important to know something about each of the types of faucets that you've got in your home...continue reading

Common Types of Heating Systems
The most common type of heating appliance is a furnace, usually fueled by natural gas, oil or another combustible fuel. The combustion of the fuel is the heat source, but more important than the fuel, is the means by which the heat is distributed throughout the house, most often a forced air distribution system. These types of systems are associated with floor, wall and ceiling vents that deliver the heat from the appliance to the different...continue reading

Does Your Home Improvement Require A Building Permit
This might sound odd, and perhaps a bit too vague, which is understandable.  Mechanical work is work on one or two-family dwellings and includes work on heating, cooling, or ventilation systems, including bath vents and woodstoves. Installation, alteration, or repair of gas piping between the meter and an appliance or other equipment, including all liquefied petroleum gas piping, is also considered mechanical work...continue reading

Plumbing - Unclogging a Sink or Bathtub
Get approximately one cup of borax (I get mine in the laundry aisle at Wal-Mart, but it is a common item so look around your favorite store). Shove and stuff the borax down the drain in question. Really pack it in as best you can. On top of that, add approximately one half cup of regular table salt. Get it all in the drain as best as you can, but if it is overflowing don't worry about it- salt and borax are perfectly safe so no worries. Next, add boiling (and I stress boiling) water. I find it best, safest and most precise...continue reading

Quick Fixes to Toilet Problems
A Quick Fix to this problem is to find the water valve to the toilet tank and close it until it is about a one quarter to a one-half turn from completely being shut off. This will slow the rate of the toilet flush. The toilet tank will fill more slowly, but it's the difference between shower shock and a mild temperature fluctuation...continue reading

Upgrading Your Bathroom Fixtures
Start your upgrades by taking a trip to your local home improvement center or plumbing supply house to view the styles of fixtures available. If you have a specific design style in mind, you may want to take pictures of the faucets you like with you and talk to a design specialist at the store.  It is a good idea to speak to a plumbing assistant to determine which fixtures in your bathroom can be upgraded and if the style you want to use is feasible.  Take your time choosing the fixtures you are going...continue reading

The Ins and Outs of Plumbing
There are several municipal pumping stations where a supply of fresh water is brought in through pumps. The waste water flows downhill until it reaches a point where pumping stations force the material into a sewage plant. In both cases where the average home is concerned, the system which is referred to as the Drain-Waste-Vent-System ( DWV) is equipped with vent pipes that extend up and through the roof...continue reading

The Faucets in Your Home
When water starts to leak in your home, you'll need to know what to do and how to fix it even if the damage is big enough to warrant calling a plumber.  One of the first steps you will need to take is to locate the main water shut off. As the name suggests, this will shut off all the water to the toilets, sinks, and major appliances in the event of a major leak. Usually this major water shut off valve is located in the basement...continue reading

Improving The Plumbing in Your Home
A good water heater won't do you much good if all the heat gets leaked out through the pipes.  Therefore you should insulate your water pipes especially the ones in the exterior walls that are more exposed to cold temperatures.  This is where you lose significant amounts of energy.  As well as reducing the amount of energy you lose as the water flows through your pipes, this technique will also reduce what is termed as standby losses. This is energy lost through the...continue reading

The Plumbing System: Wells
Of course rural homes usually have wells and generally there are two types of these that can be found, deep and shallow. If a well is less than twenty-five feet deep it falls under the shallow category and the other variety can be up to several hundred feet deep in some areas. Although deeper wells are less likely to be contaminated, most home inspectors will recommend that water samples should be taken and analyzed by a reputable...continue reading

Plumbing Emergencies
In suburban locations the local water company supplies water to all the homes in the neighborhood through a water main and the meter which is attached to the main, records all of the water consumption. It's important that you know where the water meter is in your house and how to turn it off in the event of an emergency. Water meters are made of brass and about 6 inches in diameter. Most of them have a housing that contains a dial and an odometer similar to one in your car...continue reading

All About Water Heaters
Of course electric hot water heaters work on a different principle. In this kind of unit, the tank is heated by an insulated heating element immersed in water.  The difference here is that many electric units have two thermostats directing two elements in the tank. To operate properly as well, an electric hot water heater should be hooked up to a 240 volt electrical service, one that only gives off...continue reading

Green Water Heating
If you're like most people, you won't go out and buy a new water heater until the old one goes. The experts suggest that the law of averages dictates that your existing water heater will go at the worst possible time and that will mean that you'll need to rush out and buy one without taking the time to consider or look for a water heater that best fits your needs and offers a high range of energy efficiency.  Of course a much...continue reading

Bad Water Pressure in Your Home?

Water pressure is an important factor in any home, and bad water pressure can be a source of aggravation and frustration. There are a number of reasons why your water pressure may not be the best, and fixing this problem may require some troubleshooting and a little effort but it can be done. Some of the reasons why you may experience bad water pressure can be pipes which are very small, too small to carry an adequate amount of water for your needs, old fixtures and lines, ancient water mains, hard mineral buildup which narrows the water pipes, bad pressure regulators, water leaks, and other problems. To solve the bad water pressure issue, you must understand why you have bad water pressure in the first place. The cause of the water pressure issue will determine the steps needed to fix these issues.

The first thing you need to determine if you are experiencing less than optimal water pressure is whether the supply lines, water main, and fixtures are adequate. If any of these components are too small or are older, you may not have the capability to increase your water pressure and flow without upgrading your plumbing completely. You may need to remove and replace these components to ensure you have the right water flow and pressure. This may mean a complete overhaul and upgrade of your water supply system. This can take some time and be a little costly, but the result is water pressure that up until now you have only been able to dream about.

If your lines, water main, and fixtures have adequate sized pipes and equipment and they are newer, you may have problems elsewhere in the system. If you have noticed that over time your water pressure and the water flow has slowly gotten worse, you may have a problem with mineral buildup. If you have hard water and have noticed a residue in your sinks or even stains, that resemble rust, then hard water and mineral deposits may be to blame. If this is the case, there are several things that you can try that may resolve the problem. Using a cleaner solution for hard water and mineral deposits, like Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover, can help remove some of the deposits from faucet outlets so that more water can flow and the pressure will increase. You can soak your faucets and shower head in these cleaners, but if the deposits are in the pipes you may need to remove the pipes and replace them.

The pressure regulator can also be the culprit if you have bad water pressure. If this is the case you may need to get professional help to resolve this issue because of the location of this part and the complex nature of the repairs needed. The pressure regulator is a bell shaped device which is normally located under the hose connection to your home. Trying to replace these pressure regulators without professional help can result in much bigger problems and higher expenses. Using a licensed plumber means having this part replaced quickly and fairly inexpensively, and should be considered the only way to fix this problem.

The level of elevation concerning your water storage tank can also have an impact on the water pressure you have. The ideal spot for your water storage tank is at an elevation which is higher than your home, and if the tank is set a lot lower than your home you will not get good water pressure because the water must flow up hill. In this situation you may need to move the water storage tank so that the water can flow down to the home, and this can increase your water flow and pressure significantly.

Another factor that can affect your water pressure is the water valve. Make sure that the main water valve is all the way on, and not just partially turned. If the main water valve is not open all the way this will limit the amount of water that can enter the pipes, and cause bad water pressure and flow. Make sure your pipes do not have any leaks which can lower the pressure, because this can slow down the water and make it less forceful as well. Bad water pressure can be fixed, but it may require some troubleshooting and investigation to pinpoint the exact cause.
