Mold Can Cause Serious Damage To Your Health
Molds can also cause health problems because it is irritating to your tissues, either on the inside or the outside of the body. If your skin comes into contact with mold, you may develop skin rashes and irritation that may need a prescription cream from your doctor to treat and get rid of. Mold irritation can cause itching, swelling, welts, and even hives to appear on your skin. Of all the health risks posed by different types of molds, the most serious is...continue reading

New Homes Have Their Fair Share of Problems Too
Make sure to inspect the exterior of your home well. Check any wood to ensure that it is properly protected; otherwise moisture can get into the interior of your home, including the spaces between the walls. This is where mold can grow undetected, and some molds are known to be harmful when inhaled...continue reading

Facts About Mold Inspection - How To Prevent & Repair Mold Problems
Once the mold inspection is done and you know that the extent of the mold can be cleaned without professional help, it is time to start the cleaning. Make sure to be aware of any hazards that can be present along with the mold. Many times flooding can result in bacterial hazards because of sewage, and wet areas may pose a shock hazard if there is electricity in the same areas. Use damp cloths to lightly wipe the mold off of the surface, while wearing the appropriate safety protection...continue reading

What is a Mold Inspection, and is it Necessary?
A thorough mold inspection should be done any time mold contamination is suspected, or if you are buying a home and want to make sure there is no mold present that is not visible. Mold testing can be done many ways, from swabs to air samples to tape samples and others, and each testing method has advantages and disadvantages. If mold is found during a mold inspection, the inspector may take swab samples ....continue reading

Mold & Home Inspections
The danger level occurs when mold reaches a size of roughly 2 square feet. Also of concern is if mold has infested household items like insulation, drywall, or carpet. If so, these materials should be immediately extracted and the source of the dampness or wetness should be fixed. When replacing these items, it is best to use a non-cellulose and low nitrogen replacement material...continue reading

Common Molds Found During A Mold Inspection, and Their Effects
A mold inspection may uncover one of the one hundred and sixty species of  Aspergillus mold, out of which sixteen of these species can cause diseases in humans. These molds are the most common, and can be found in a wide variety of places. The most common of this mold species is Aspergillus fumigatus, and this variety and Aspergillus niger are the two most harmful types from this mold species. This mold is considered harmful, because it can produce mycotoxins...continue reading

Mold inspection Guide
Sometimes mold is undetectable because it is hidden behind wallpaper, dry wall or paneling. Or it could be behind walls where pipes connect or behind furniture, inside ductwork or roofing materials. These types of mold are harder to discover but you might be alerted that something is wrong because there is a moldy smell or musky scent or creaking floors. It is important not to try to investigate on your own since exposing these areas can lead to the release of the hidden mold spores that could cause them to spread unnecessarily...continue reading

Investment Property: Mold inspection
Mold spores have a job to do. Decompose organic matter and reproduce.  As mold is produced, they release new spores that become attached to any moist areas they may come in contact with. It is these moist areas that mold flourishes, in nature, and in our buildings and homes. What can be expected of mold is that is will grow. The bigger the mold infestation becomes, the bigger the effect of mold on the air quality and character of an occupied space. Mold has been known to disable some persons and has actually caused death...continue reading

A Basic Primer on Mold Inspection
Locations with a more humid climate have a more severe risk for mold. Even if your building is new and was constructed with mold and mildew treated materials, you need a regularly scheduled mold inspection and regular re application of mold preventatives to protect your investment. Even if you live in a semi-arid state, living near a lake or in a constantly shady area could add a tremendous amount of moisture to the air, thus attacking the integrity of your walls daily with unnoticed moisture. Moisture in the air is your worst enemy when it comes to mold...continue reading

Environmental Issues with Foreclosures
You can also purchase foreclosed property directly from the bank, which is less risky than buying at auction. When a bank has foreclosed on a home and offered it for auction, with no bids, the bank retains ownership. Most lenders want to sell quickly, as a means of recouping some of the loss incurred in foreclosing. Although you will not get a home for ‘next to nothing’ as television ads would have you believe, you do stand to get a very good price. Again, it is highly recommended that you hire a home mold inspector to check out the property before you close the deal...continue reading

Mold and Your Health
Toxic mold can cause many health problems, and the worst strain of this mold type is the famous black toxic mold called Stachybotrys. With toxic molds, it is not the mold itself that can harm your health and cause symptoms. Instead, these molds release toxins called mycotoxins that can attack and harm your body and internal organs. Schools in Florida were plagued by this toxic mold a few years ago, and many students were exhibiting symptoms and medical problems varying from mild to extremely severe. When the classrooms were inspected...continue reading

A third type of mold consists of infectious, toxic, and pathogenic molds, which are known to be harmful to your health. These molds pose a risk not just to the young, elderly, and those who suffer from a compromised immune system, but also to healthy individuals who have no medical conditions or problems. The most common type of mold that causes medical problems in humans are the molds which belong to the Aspergillis genus, of which sixteen different types of this mold can have health risks involved with exposure. Getting Rid of Mold
Getting rid of mold is a simple matter when the contamination area is small, or the molds present are not toxic or harmful to your health. Visible mold can be cleaned with a sponge dampened by soap and water, or with a solution of water and bleach, if the smell of vinegar is too strong or can not be tolerated. If mold has spread to larger areas, is hidden in wall spaces and other hard to get to areas, or is a dangerous strain that is infectious or that produces mycotoxins which can cause illness and other health complications, it may be necessary to call in experts for mold remediation...continue reading

How To Kill Mold
Knowing how to kill mold can help you ensure that you do a thorough job and prevent the mold from returning. If you are going to clean and kill mold, it may be advisable to wet down the area being cleaned. Mold will not release spores when it is wet, only in the dry state. Wetting the area down before cleaning it will kill mold and prevent contaminating the air in your home. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation to help keep the air clean and safe while you are killing and cleaning contaminated areas that have mold. Use a soapy solution of water and antibacterial dish soap to scrub any visible mold off of surfaces. If possible, use a solution of ...continue reading

New York Mold Testing - Inspection and Detection
New York mold testing, inspection, and detection should start with a visual home inspection for mold. If mold is seen, cultures should be taken to determine exactly what types of mold you have present. A home inspector that looks for mold also looks for any signs of water damage, which can indicate a risk of mold contamination. The inspector should also check the ventilation ducts and system, because moisture can condense in these ducts and then sit there, contributing to mold growth. The inspector should also take surface swabs or tape samples. If a visual...continue reading

Mold and The Immune Compromised
Anyone who is immune compromised should especially use caution around toxic molds. These molds excrete a toxin that can be harmful to humans when ingested, inhaled, or touched with the skin. These molds can be a serious health risk even for healthy individuals with good immune systems, and they can prove severe or even deadly for anyone who does not have a good immune system. Certain molds not only release toxins that can cause detrimental health effects, in a person who has a lowered immune response, mold can actually grow in the body and internal organs, as well as on the surface of the skin...continue reading

Stachybotrys Black Mold Testing
Stachybotrys black mold testing may include taking several samples, using different methods. The first sampling method is a swab test. This testing method is used in every location where mold is visible. This testing will allow samples taken to be analyzed and identified, so that the appropriate remediation measures can be taken. Once the areas are swabbed and samples are taken of each mold growth that is seen, these samples are sent to a lab to determine the type of mold present. Indoor air samples may also be taken as part of any Stachybotrys black mold testing. This test should be performed using Volumetric Air...continue reading

What is mold? In the world of science, mold is named filamentous fungi, and there are over one hundred thousand types of these fungi. More than one thousand of these mold types are commonly found in America. Even if mold is not seen, the spores are always present, and all a spore needs to become mold is food and moisture. Mold is present both inside and outside of your home, and can get in your home many ways. Spores are carried on the wind, and can blow in with the air when you open the doors or windows. Testing for Mold
You may be surprised to know that the Environmental Protection Agency and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend routine sampling for molds. Furthermore in the case of a real estate purchase, if a seller detects mold in their home, they are under no obligation to ensure the home is mold free once the easily visible mold is gone, thus taking a ‘head in the sand’ approach legally protected by the  New York “Property Condition Disclosure Act”. It is for this reason that a trained and licensed home mold inspector is highly recommended before any purchase of residential or commercial real estate is made...continue reading

Black Mold Symptoms:  What to Look For

Black mold, a deadly bacterial growth that has plagued humans since biblical times, is making a strong upsurge in today's fast-paced world and, as the problem rapidly spreads, experts recommend that everybody, be they homeowners or apartment dwellers, learn to identify the symptoms associated with constant exposure to the potentially deadly, airborne bacteria.

With issues ranging from asthma to fatal infections, scientists say it is best to catch black mold symptoms early, seek medical treatment and call in professional cleaners to clear your home or office of the problem.

The Problem

Shutting down schools and clearing out offices, black mold is a tough fungal anomaly that, when inhaled daily, can cause serious health risks. Floating through the air in the form of microscopic spores, black mold tends to grow in damp, dark places like the cabinet under the sink or the bathroom wall. Professional mold removal companies have reported finding mold clusters in attics, behind refrigerators and underneath windowsills. Basically, water and mold go hand-in-hand.

Scientists believe the rapid growth of black mold is, in large part, is due to cheaper home construction quality and increased levels of insulation. During the energy crisis in the 1970s, construction practices changed dramatically as home and business owners sought to build more energy efficient buildings. This trend has continued into the 21rst century. Now, with foam insulation and energy-saving windows, buildings are near airtight and, often times, not properly ventilated. This, coupled with the cheaper building materials like drywall and particleboard, has created a breeding ground for black mold.

The Symptoms

Health issues often begin with the formation of allergies. People may start to experience sinus congestion, asthmatic episodes, eye irritation, soreness of the nose and throat and minor respiratory issues. When inhaled, mold spores tend to germinate and attach to cells along the respiratory tract. Often times people associate these symptoms with a bad cold or even the flu but, the reality is, if symptoms persist for more than a week or two, there is good chance they are being victimized by black mold; a silent predator that can kill if left unchecked.

Black mold, overtime, causes serious problems for the vulnerable, like the elderly, young or people with immune deficiency, and, according to some research, it can eventually break down even the toughest immune system.

A serious condition generated by constant mold exposure is called Systemic Fungal Infection. Vulnerable individuals or people constantly exposed to black mold are easily susceptible to this problem. Issues with digestive tract, like pain and blockage, along with sinus infections are the most common telltale signs. Other indicators include lung and skin infections. If these symptoms arise, which are often misdiagnosed by even the best family practitioner, people should seek immediate medical attention or face death. Sometimes treatment can take months and even years. The first thing victims should do, of course, is make sure they are no longer exposed to the problem.

Weakened immune systems that are targeted by these germinating spores will eventually allow other bacterial infections or viruses a free ride in. Under the right conditions, unsuspecting individuals succumb to colds on a seemingly monthly basis thanks to the long-term effects of spore inhalation. This hypersensitivity is created when black mold spores, dead or alive, are directly inhaled. It is estimated that some five percent of humans suffer these symptoms; runny nose, congestion, respiratory irritation, etc..... due to mold exposure at some point in their lifetime.

The Cure

First and foremost, professional remediators should be called in to eradicate the mold problem. In some cases, there is little a homeowner can do as the mold takes over humid wall cavities or floor bays. Offices, schools and houses are often abandoned due to severe mold contamination. Running dehumidifiers and reducing overall dampness is the first priority and, if that isn't doable, it is time to get out. Experts recommend that, no matter which path people take, there is no time to delay.

Fresh air is, by far, the most effective treatment to small, irritating exposure while, in more extreme cases, close medical care is necessary. Sometimes health issues can, in the long run, be a permanent problem that medical practitioners can only work to ease rather than cure.

Doctors, for example, may prescribe antihistamines or nasal decongestants that, unfortunately, won't cure problem but, instead, provide temporary relief from black mold symptoms. In more severe cases, specialists can be called in and inhalers and other, stronger drugs will be prescribed. They may even call for immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is a treatment that involves the injection of the irritant in an effort to develop immunity. This same practice is applied in vaccinations.

One thing is for certain, people exposed to black mold on a daily basis should work swiftly to remedy the situation and, when black mold symptoms are at their worst, victims should seek professional help.

Black Mold Test Kits and How To Buy Them

If you have discovered black mold in your home or work environment, it is important that you take the appropriate steps immediately to eradicate the problem and ensure that you take measures to minimize the risk of its return. Black mold is extremely toxic and can lead to serious health issues, however black mold usually doesn’t grow unless it has a substantial amount of water to colonize and spread.

Mold testing kits will confirm for you that you have a mold problem but it is important that you ensure that all areas of your home or business or are inspected and/or tested so that you are confident that you have completely solved your problem. There are two types of mold tests, air sampling and surface sampling. It is usually a good idea to take at least one test of each type to ensure that you accurately diagnose the problem.

Following are some mold tests that might be used:

Spore trap – This is a particulate sampling using a testing cassette that is fast and easy to use and will analyze airborne particulates such as mold spores, insect parts, pollen and skin fragments and will give a concentration level of spores. While easy to do for airborne analysis it does not distinguish between viable or non-viable organisms.

-     Bulk or surface samples – This is a sampling done on flooring, drywall or other materials that will identify spore count and distinguish between viable and non-viable organisms. It can however be destructive to property and frustrating if it is determined that it was negative and almost unnecessary, but it is actually very  effective and worth the peace of mind; damage made is usually minimul.

-     Bioaerosol sampling - This relates to airborne organisms and it can be compared to other types such as bulk or swab results but it can be time consuming and expensive.

-     Swab or tape sampling – This is an inexpensive and fast way to obtain spore count on irregular hard surfaces and it is not destructive, however results may miss other organisms in porous materials.

-     Wall checks – This provides results that tells if there is contamination behind cabinets, walls or other areas although you cannot get samples for bacteria and it can be misleading.

Black mold tests are important to determine the extent of the contamination and they will identify what your next steps should be. Finding black mold test kits are relatively easy, but it is important that you ensure that you are purchasing kits from a reputable company that has proper certification to provide environmental inspections and testing.  It is essential to find a company that has a professional staff that can answer your questions accurately and ensure that you get the best solution for your mold remediation problem.

If you do the testing yourself, it is essential that you purchase kits for each area that you think is affected so that you can have a separate sample for each. Protective gear should be worn which includes special clothing that covers you completely with no skin exposure and can be easily removed and cleaned after completion of the test. If you are able to, a Tyvek suit should be worn that can be discarded when finished. Rubber gloves and goggles should be worn as well as a filter dust mask or respirator so that you do not inhale the mold spores. Some models include a TC-21C particle respirator or a N95 respirator.

All family members, pets or non-essential people should be removed from the area that is being tested and should not return until the clean up process is completed. Each area to be tested should be sealed off with plastic sheeting with air ducts covered with plastic to completely contain the work area. If there is a lot of testing to be done, you should take regular breaks to get fresh air during the process. Once samples are taken they should be sealed in plastic bags prior to removal from area. If moldy materials are removed during this time that are not being sent to a laboratory, these too should be sealed in plastic and removed.

Once the testing is completed, you should remove the protective gear inside the work area and either bag it for disposal or immediately wash it separately. All areas that have been tested should then be aired out and dried thoroughly with dehumifiers or air purifiers or fans.

If you decide that you want to use a professional to perform the black mold testing, you should contact a Olympian at 866-476-2056 and discuss your situation clearly so that our certified specialists will be able to clearly understand your needs.

Removing Mold – Test It First or Don’t Touch It!

Mold is a fact of life in homes whether we want to acknowledge it or not. Mold can grow just about anywhere if it has the chance – all it needs is a little moisture and it’s on its way to spreading its spores throughout our homes. Some molds are easily recognizable such as those that grow on bread that has been opened from its packaging and these will develop very quickly. Vegetables, fruit and leftover foods are common to grow mold as well, and when they do, we simply remove the mold by throwing away the items that are contaminated and spoiled.

  • There are other molds though, that we might already have in our home and not be aware of, including:

  • Molds that grow in the back of a piece of furniture that is against an outside wall of a house

  • The back of a closet that has clothing that was damp or wet when it was put inside so that the closet wall as well as the clothing could have mold

  • Laundry rooms frequently have mold because of damp clothing or linens that are left in the washer or dryer and also tend to have a high humidity level

  • Kitchens without exhaust fans could easily have mold around the stove if there is a constant level of steam from cooking or a leak behind a refrigerator, dishwasher or under the sink

  • Bathrooms have several possible leakage areas that include toilets, sinks and showers... and the ceramic tiles or fiberglass surfaces can have soap scum that produces mold

  • Basements or garages frequently have mold where there is possible leakage from outside landscaping or moisture on the concrete walls or floors or from firewood or other materials that might be stored there

Once you are looking for mold, you are more likely to spot it or detect its presence... if there is a musty odor, that is a sure indication that there is mold somewhere in the vicinity. Other indications are discolorations on surfaces that can be green, white, brown, orange or black. Molds don’t just need leaks to form,... high humidity or temperatures between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit can increase the chances of mold incubation although mold will also grow in temperatures as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Preventive measures can help you to keep your home or workplace free from mold contamination. It is important to clean up surfaces that have spills or collect water by keeping them dry and clean. Run the exhaust fan in the bathroom to reduce moisture levels and minimize the chance of mold buildup. Ensure that clothing is dry and clean when it is put in a closet. In particular this applies to outside garments such as a raincoat or winter jacket that might be wet when you remove it. It should be dried first before placing it in the closet.

Other preventive measures are using air conditioners or dehumidifiers when humidity is high and ventilating your property when the outside air is cooler. This in turn increases the air flow in your home. Give your closets some circulation by keeping the doors open to increase air flow. Move furniture away from walls where they might otherwise be subject to moisture from an outside wall. Ensure that you have thermal pane windows and insulation in walls that will prevent condensation from forming thereby giving mold a chance to grow.

When you find mold it is important to clean it up and remove it as soon as possible, particularly if it is a small area or object that can easily be cleaned. Use gloves and protective garments and a mask and goggles if possible. If mold is found on hard plastic, glass or metal items they can be cleaned by using a soap or detergent that does not contain ammonia. Once cleaned they should be thoroughly dried and then disinfected with a solution of one cup of bleach mixed with one gallon of water that is applied and left on the surface for fifteen minutes to ensure that the mold is eradicated. Other products that can be purchased are biocides that are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and are intended to kill molds.

Porous materials that have a mold should be disposed of as you will not be able to eradicate the mold from its surface. It is best not to touch it. If you suspect serious mold problems, home mold testing kits are available that can be used to test an area to determine the types of mold and the concentration levels. However to be safe, it is best to call an Olympian Professional mold inspector if you are in New York, long Island, Westchester or any of the surrounding boroughs to inspect and test your home.

Understanding Mold

Everyone has seen mold on a piece of wood in the forest or on fruit or cheese left too long in the refrigerator but most people don’t think too much about it or believe that it could affect their health. The fact of the matter is that mold is a common part of our environment, but when it invades your home and threatens your family’s health, that presents a different perspective.

Mold is a fungus that enters your home every day through open windows or doors, in your air conditioning or heating system and even on your clothes or your pet. The spores reproduce at a rapid rate and thrive in areas that are moist and like temperatures between forty and 100 degrees. One of their favorite places to grow is in bathrooms where the humidity is high and if the room is frequently used and without efficient ventilation it can incubate and multiply easily. Basements and kitchens are other areas that mold frequently presents itself and moisture can collect easily in these places as well.

Mold loves the dark and so a leaky faucet or pipe that is hidden under a sink or in a wall can become a breeding ground for mold without you being aware of it. Overwatering of plants that grow close to the home can cause seepage into a basement or garage or other areas of the house and collect behind the walls for long periods of time before discovery. Slow leaks through improperly sealed windows, doors or cracks in the stucco or exterior of a home can give mold a chance to invade your home. Inadequate insulation in the attic or other areas of the home can provide a source of water access and can lead to mold formation.

Some molds can be seen as they grow because they form a blotchy discoloration that can be any number of colors from brown, yellow, pink or black and shades in between. Others are detected because you notice a musty odor. Mildew in your shower or on the tile floor is a form of mold that can start multiplying and spreading if it is not cleaned regularly.  Some indications of mold might be respiratory problems for family members with symptoms like runny noses, itchy eyes or skin rashes. Because molds don’t affect everyone the same way, you might have a mold problem but have no adverse reactions while another family member could have severe reactions.

Any time you have flooding in your home or a serious sewer backup or overflowing toilet you can lay the groundwork for mold growth. When these accidents occur, most people think that just by cleaning up the area you have solved the problem, but that is not necessarily so. If a carpet or other porous material becomes wet and has mold contamination it usually needs to be removed and replaced because no amount of cleaning will get rid of the mold. Most non-porous surfaces that are made of metal, glass or plastic can be cleaned and dried thoroughly using a mixture of chlorine bleach with hot water (in a ratio of one part chlorine and nine parts water) and the mold should be eradicated.

When these accidents occur cleaning does not always get rid of the problem if there was already a buildup of mold around the pipes or in the wall or flooring prior to the incident. A serious mold problem requires remedial action that could require you to literally tear out the walls to find the source of the problem and to ensure that you completely rid yourself of the mold.  A professional who is experienced in this sort of mold remediation should be contacted to do this.

So how do you prevent mold from getting comfortable and spreading in your home? There are actions that you can take on a regular basis to keep your home healthy and safe for your family members. Regular maintenance checks and cleaning will keep your home mold-free and should prevent any problems from occurring.

Try to maintain a humidity level in your home that is around sixty percent during the summer and at forty percent during the winter months. Heating and air conditioning will help as well as proper ventilation in your home. If a bathroom gets a lot of use and has little ventilation, you might want to consider doing some renovations to make it more resistant to mold growth with an exhaust fan that vents to the outdoors if possible. The kitchen is another area where this should be done if you don’t have an exhaust fan venting outside.

Regular cleaning of your gaskets on your freezer and refrigerator doors will prevent moisture from forming there. Also ensure that the doors are sealed properly. Books, clothing or other porous materials should be stored in areas that are not humid. In particular you should not put wet coats or other clothing into a closet, giving mold a chance to breed and spread in the dark closet.

Outside your home, you can ensure that your landscaping is properly graded so that the sprinklers and/or downspouts direct water away from your home rather than towards it. Sprinklers should be directed away from the house so that water is not falling directly on it or allowed to seep into the home. Check all foliage and plants that grow directly next to your home to insure that the moisture is not causing seepage inside walls and into the basement or garage.

Ensure that your gutters and downspouts are kept clear of debris and are not clogged so that water flows from your roof and doesn’t leak into your attic. Check that all windows and doors are properly sealed so that there is no cause of leaks into rooms, through ceilings or walls. If you have wood stored outside, see to it that it is kept covered with a tarp or other covering or if possible store it inside a shed or the basement. These measures will all help to ensure that your home is kept mold-free and healthy for your family.
