Medical research has made it clear that black mold is the main cause of allergy symptoms amongst the general population. The mold Stachybotrys, found in homes, offices and schools has been strongly linked to fatal pulmonary disorders.

In order to detect the possibility of mold, have you come across any of the following indicators?

  • Discoloration or black mold on baseboards, wallboards, or wallpaper.

  • Cracks in shower tile, lack of caulking, loose toilet seal, leaks under sink

  • Carpet and padding in direct contact with concrete slab

  • Poorly maintained or dirty air conditioning/heating vents and filters

  • Damp basement or crawl space

  • Water penetration (water marks on walls, mold spots on walls)

  • Musty/ moldy odor

If you have answered YES to any one of the above questions, then you may be experiencing EXPOSURE TO BLACK MOLD!

What is Mold and Where is It Often Found?

Molds are microscopic organisms, and they are everywhere around us, both inside and outside. Molds can be found on plants, food, leaves, and many other other organic materials. Other good candidates to promote mold growth would be cellulose materials, including, cardboard, paper, wallpaper, ceiling tiles, and of course, sheet rock. Mold spores are easily dispersed and commonly made airborne by doing every day things such as vacuuming, walking across a carpet or even laying on the sofa. Indoors, mold has been known to infest air conditioning ducts (HVAC Systems), carpeting, houseplants, etc.

In What Ways Can Mold Affect Your Health and The Health of The Ones You Love?

Exposure to mold is certainly unhealthy for everyone, but the following groups of people are at a particularly higher risk for negative health effects through exposure: infants, young children, the elderly, the autoimmune compromised, pregnant women, and persons which have pre-existing respiratory conditions. When inhaled, even in small quantities, mold can often cause a wide range of negative health effects including respiratory problems (like wheezing), nasal and sinus congestion, watery and red eyes, nose and throat irritation, skin irritation, aches and pains, fevers, asthma, emphysema and in some cases even death.

Mold Can Be Found In Many Areas Of Your Home

  • Attic

  • Living Rooms

  • Bathrooms

  • (HVAC) Ventilation System

  • Bedrooms

  • Kitchens

  • Basements

  • Any Moist Areas

  • Carpets

  • Garage

How does mold attack?

When moldy materials are damaged and disrupted, the spores (reproductive bodies which work like seeds) are released into the atmosphere. Some of the possible sources of indoor moisture, humidity and water problems that can easily cause a mold infestation include: flooded basements, leaking roofs, excessive use of humidifiers, even in slightly damp basements or crawl spaces, ongoing plumbing leaks, indoor house plants, steam from regularly boiling on the stove top, shower and bath steam, indoor clothes lines, and clothing dryers which are vented indoors.

Protection...Testing Is Your First Line Of Defense

To properly determine if mold is truly a problem in your home or office, you will need to conduct proper mold testing.

The Olympian Professional Black Mold Test Kit uses a patented analysis method for the highest accuracy and dependability. The easy to use do-it-yourself test allows you to determine whether or not toxic mold spores are currently in the air that you breathe. Surface sampling may also be conducted to determine what type of mold growth is present. Optional lab analysis is available to indicate the type and quantity of mold present and also includes a consultation with Inspector; Dennis Kanakis to discuss the results.

The Black Mold Stachybotrys Chartarum (atra)

Stachybotrys Chartarum is a green-black toxic mold that thrives particularly well on high-cellulose materials, like straw, hay, wet leaves, sheet rock, carpets, wall paper, fiber board, ceiling tiles, etc. Stachbotrys, before drying, is usually wet and slightly slimy to touch. There are around fourteen different species of Stachybotrys, known around the world. This toxic mold grows in areas where relative humidity is generally above 55%. This mold is not likely to grow on plastic, vinyl, cement products, or ceramic tiles. It is also never found amongst the greenish mold that is often found on stale bread or even the black mold which is commonly found on bathroom shower tiles.

Stachybotrys produces a mycotoxin which has been scientifically linked to human mycotoxicosis.

This mold is thought to be the most common cause of the infamous "sick building syndrome". Children exposed to Stachybotrys are most likely to end up with pulmonary hemosiderosis, defined as bleeding in the lungs. The following is a list of symptoms associated with exposure to Stachybotrys mold spores:

  1. Respiratory problems, such as wheezing, and difficulty in breathing

  2. Nasal and sinus congestion

  3. Eyes-burning, watery, reddened, blurry vision, light sensitivity

  4. Dry, hacking cough

  5. Sore throat

  6. Nose and throat irritation

  7. Shortness of breath

  8. Chronic fatigue

  9. Skin irritation

  10. Central nervous system problems (constant headaches, memory problems, and mood changes)

  11. Aches and pains

  12. Possible fever

  13. Diarrhea

  14. Possible hemosiderosis

  15. Immune suppression

Toxic Mold Test Kits

There are many different reasons why mold testing kits and a home mold inspection should be done, and these can range from visible mold growths in your home to occupants of the home becoming sick frequently with no known cause, and many others. The biggest reason that test kits are purchased is to ensure that the air in your home is safe to breathe, and free from mycotoxins produced by toxic molds which can cause many health effects that range from mild to deadly. Any time you are going to purchase a new home, testing kits should be used before you make the final purchase agreement, to protect you, your family, and your finances. There have been many cases of homes being bought only to have the new owner discover that black molds have been growing in the home undetected for years. Professional mold remediation can be quite costly, and as the new owner this cleanup will be your financial responsibility. Insist on a mold test with negative results as a condition of any purchase agreement, even though you must pay for the test kit and analysis yourself. This will give you the assurances you need that the home is safe for you and your loved ones to occupy.

There are other reasons that these test kits should be used when buying a new home. If you have a home that has high levels of humidity, which is fifty percent or more humidity, then you may have invisible or hidden toxic black mold contamination. All black molds including the toxic variety thrive in damp places, and a high humidity level provides the perfect place for them to grow and colonize. If your home has high humidity most of the time, purchase several kits to test the air and purchase some dehumidifiers to correct the humidity problem. Leaking pipes or a leak or hole in your roof can also contribute to mold growth, because normally this water stays inside the wall cavities, creating a moist dark environment that invites mold to grow. Because these problems are not always visible, toxic mold test kits are required if you suspect any type of water damage anywhere in your home. Otherwise molds can grow in the walls and structure for years, with the only clue being the health effects that are suffered by the occupants of the home.

Odors and evidence of flooding are two more good reasons to order your mold test kit for your home. Flooding can cause hidden water damage inside the home, and these damp spaces may not dry completely. This allows the mold to grow on the damp surfaces, especially materials that contain cellulose, like drywall and other building materials. Many times basements flooding can be the start of severe contamination, because the wall cavities are not dried or replaced completely. Odors can also alert you to the fact that testing is needed. Odors that smell musty, dusty, earthy, or mildewy can be a sign that there is hidden mold contamination in your home, which can be toxic. Molds can be hidden in the heating and cooling systems of your home as well, because moisture and condensation can collect in the vents, and this can lead to musty odors blowing through the entire home. Odors are not the only thing being spread; there can also be spores and mycotoxins that are being blown through the air in your home as well.

Serious health problems can also indicate a need for the purchase of a good test kit. If you notice that you or family members have started to have increased allergy symptoms, or have respiratory problems, this can be a sign that contamination is present and that testing should be done. Almost all sinus infections are caused by spores and their mycotoxins, so if you suffer from these conditions order your kit, check your home and protect yourself. Toxic poisoning can also indicate the need for mold testing. Poisoning includes symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, uncontrolled vomiting, problems concentrating or focusing, and a decrease in attention span. If any of these symptoms are present, a mold inspection test should be done as soon as possible. Molds can cause many different health problems, including some that are serious and even deadly. These symptoms can include organ damage, brain damage, organ failure, and even death. Because of this, making sure there is no toxic mold present in your home by ordering a few test kits is essential. Lastly, mold may also be one cause of hemorrhaging in the lungs of exposed infants, although this link has not been definitively proven as of yet.

Black Mold Allergy Symptoms

Black mold, sometimes called toxic mold, can cause allergies, as well as more serious conditions. Just like any other allergies, some people are more susceptible to problems when exposed to black mold than others are. This includes infants, children, the elderly, and those who have a lowered or compromised immune system. Toxic, or black, mold contamination in your home may be a serious problem. Most mold allergies can range from mild to very annoying, but they are not a health hazard or serious medical problem. With black mold, and other colors of mold, that produce mycotoxins, however, allergy symptoms can become severe, and even life threatening or fatal.

Not all black mold is toxic, and some molds that are green, brown, or other colors can produce mycotoxins and become just as dangerous. It is not the color of the mold, but the type that creates the danger. Toxic mold is associated with black mold that is slimy because of the mold type Stachybotrys. This mold is the most toxic, and the type responsible for most of the news reports about mold that is dangerous to your health. No mold is safe, and any mold contamination, regardless of the types of mold involved, should be taken care of and removed immediately.

Black mold allergy symptoms can be mild and resemble hay fever symptoms, or they can be very severe, depending on the age, immune system strength, and sensitivity of the individual person. Allergic reactions to most molds can include a runny nose, difficulty breathing, sneezing, a chronic cough, hives, skin rashes, chronic sinus infections and headaches, eyes that itch and water frequently, amongst a host of other allergy symptoms. Black or toxic mold allergies can be more severe and include other medical conditions. These can include dizziness, frequent and unexplained nose bleeds, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, the appearance of blood when you cough, a hard time breathing, lung capacity that is reduced, congestion in your chest, rashes and hives on your skin, frequent headaches, anemia, memory loss and impairment, bleeding in your lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, organ damage, organ failure, and even death.

Mold allergies can become worse, and every time you are exposed, it is probable that you will become more sensitive to mold when exposed. This means that the allergy symptoms will get worse and become more sever each time you are exposed to mold. Mold allergies can also cause asthma, or cause this disease to worsen, especially where children are concerned, and this can lead to permanent damage to their lungs. Mold can cause asthma flare-ups which can be life threatening. It can also cause allergic fungal sinusitis, and this condition can require surgery. With allergic fungal sinusitis, the fungus invades and infects the sinuses and or lungs. This can result in fungal balls, which are tightly packed balls of fungal infection. These balls must be surgically removed to treat this condition. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is another fungal infection that starts with mold allergies. Most of the time this infection only occurs if you suffer from cystic fibrosis, asthma, or other lung conditions, unless you have an immune system which is suppressed or weakened. Mold allergies can also lead to a rare condition, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, caused by inflammation of the lungs due to airborne particles of mold.

Black mold allergies can be a serious condition, and can have life changing effects. People who are extremely sensitive to toxic molds can end up moving out of their home, getting rid of almost all their belongings, and miss a substantial amount of work and other activities due to symptoms that become severe. Sometimes the severity of the mold allergies may cause you to be hospitalized. Mold allergies can become life threatening, and can cause death. This is why a toxic mold test needs to be done if mold contamination is visible or suspected. Many times mold can hide in areas where it is not visible, and the proper use of a professional mold test kit or kits, can help you determine if there is hidden mold in your home or office.

Black mold allergy symptoms can cause many health problems and conditions, especially for anyone who is sensitive to mold. Preventing mold growth can help minimize and prevent mold allergy symptoms as well. Watch for any signs of water damage or flooding, especially near cellulose materials like drywall and other building materials. Toxic mold test kits can help you determine if you have mold contamination in your home or office, and all mold discovered needs to be removed immediately. There is no safe level for mold contamination, and all mold types can cause allergies or make them worse.

Identifying A Mold Problem – The First Step Is
A Free Mold Testing Kit

Mold is a serious problem that can infect a home or office, but identifying it is sometimes harder than you might think. Mold is found in practically every home and place of business because it enters on your clothing, on a breeze through an open window, on your pet’s fur or on the bottom of your shoes as you walk inside. Mold is often found under the kitchen or bathroom sink, on windowsills and air vents.

These are usually tolerable unless the spores of mold start to multiply and this can happen rapidly depending on the moisture and or humidity in a room.  Even organic foods that can develop mold within a few short days. If surfaces which have been exposed to mold are regularly cleaned with a bleach based product, this should contain the mold and deter it from spreading. However if these areas are left uncleaned, it can easily develop into a major problem that multiplies quickly.

Mold regularly feeds on leftover foods in the refrigerator, organic materials such as leather, wood, and a piece of fabric or clothing and even dead leaves. When they have time to develop and grow they can destroy the surface that they have attached themselves to, thereby weakening structures by infesting in the drywall, ceiling or flooring wherever, anywhere conducive conditions exist. Sometimes molds are easily detected as a furry growth or dark stain on a surface, and others are more difficult to identify or see since they may be hidden away.

How do you know if you truly have a mold problem? That is a question that requires some testing to answer.  The first step is to obtain a mold testing kit.

Home mold testing kits are ideal for those who are unsure about mold and want to use the most economical approach that is also a reliable testing method. Home Mold Testing Kits – Checking For
Toxic Indoor Mold Spores

Checking for toxic indoor mold spores is becoming more and more common in today’s world. As it has become easier to do, more people are taking advantage of home mold testing kits. With awareness of mold becoming more and more of a problem in homes and businesses today, it is necessary to safeguard yourself by checking for mold with a regular inspection in a home or business that you own. If you are purchasing a home, perhaps you need to add a mold test to the list of home inspection items that should be done prior to the purchase of your home. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Since most people spend most of the time indoors at home or at work, it is very important that mold inspections be a regular routine to ensure that you keep your family safe at home and your employees and customers safe at work. With home mold testing kits easy to get and easy to use, it is essential that you take the necessary steps to ensure that you know whether you have potential mold problems and resolve them before they become unmanageable and much more expensive to cure.

If you are an owner of a home or business, you owe it to yourself to be environmentally responsible by ensuring that your home and business are safe places to live and work. With home mold testing kits that are free or relatively inexpensive, there are no excuses to not be proactive about this important issue.

If you are about to sell your home or business, it is advisable to do a routine mold test prior to putting your property up for sale because if mold is found by an inspector for the buyer, it could cost you considerably more to take the necessary mold remedial actions and in fact could jeopardize the sale as the buyer might back out if the mold problem seems to be a big issue.

If you are a property owner and have tenants or you are a tenant in a rental property, you should use a home mold testing kit if you have any suspicions that there is mold. It could be very expensive and have legal implications if tenants became ill from your property where a mold test was not used.

If you have a businesses where customers and employees are present and there is a mold problem, it can be a costly mistake not to take precautionary measures of a mold testing kit to see if you have potential health issues from airborne mold spores or toxic mold. The liability issues become bigger with the size of the facility and the number of people that access your property where mold has been allowed to grow and spread without any effort to detect or eradicate it.

Improper landscaping can cause mold problems in buildings and structures where water leaks into or under a structure where the slope is towards the building rather than away from it. Building contractors can be liable for mold problems many years after the structure has been built unless there are regular inspections or mold testing to ensure that no problems develop or are allowed to expand once they are discovered.

With mold testing so easy to do, there is no reason why any responsible owner, renter or tenant shouldn’t be well informed about whether his or her home, business or office has the potential for toxic mold spores to develop. A mold test along with regular inspections to look for possible leaks in bathrooms, laundry rooms or kitchens are much easier to handle and far less expensive than if you allow water intrusion to develop and spread so that the clean up and repair is a much more costly task.

The costs for remediation of mold can be extremely expensive if entire walls and flooring have to be removed and replaced. Besides these costs, there could be legal expenses if employees or tenants are exposed to the mold and develop medical conditions from the mold. Health care costs for family members for allergies and other reactions to exposure to mold can also be expensive and in some cases fatal if the mold is toxic.

With environmental inspections and home mold testing kits readily available, this should be a commonplace activity that is performed on a regular basis so that you can have peace of mind that you have done all you could to avoid exposure to mold.

Mold Test Kit:  You Too Can Do It Yourself

Safety and peace of mind are usually priceless, but the unavoidable cost can slow corrective actions from being set into motion in a timely manner.  In such situations a Do It Yourself option can be a godsend for those with a little initiative. As with preventive medical care,  the cost of being proactive and precautionary can save you in the long run. Though most matters regarding a health threat are best left to the experts, there is a large amount of preliminary work you, as the homeowner, can do. In regards to the recent house mold epidemic, you can save time and worry for a small price by ordering a free testing kit and doing it yourself.

In 1999 a Mayo Clinic study linked almost 37 million sinus infections and respiratory problems to household molds.  These molds are part of a family, the most lethal being Stachybotrys atra, that produce mycotoxins; airborne toxins that lead to a plethora of health problems.  The problems include allergies, dizziness, memory loss, asthma, headaches, central nervous system damage and even death.  Newspapers have been filled with stories regarding mold problems and their damage.  Surprisingly, many mold problems come from newer houses whose building materials often provide great nesting and nurturing places for molds.  This usually comes as a surprise to homeowners, who rarely connect a child or spouse’s allergy with their home.

Now before you get scared and spend a fortune with professional testing and analysis or become paranoid that an old coffee stain behind your refrigerator could be a mold that is causing your respiration problems consider purchasing a Do it Yourself mold testing kit to ease (or support) your worries.

Doing it yourself has many benefits: it is inexpensive and can give you accurate results within two weeks.  Do it yourself mold testing kits are very simple and provided you do it exactly as the directions tell you to, can be very accurate.  These mold testing kits have a medium, which is a chemical solution that is found on either a stick that you swab the visible mold with or within a petri dish.  You can test visible mold or check for airborne mold that could be recycling contaminated air through air conditioning or heating systems in your house.

If you are testing visible mold, you simply take a swab of it and send it to our laboratory.  Our laboratory will then send the result’s once ready.  One note of caution, these tests will not give you a quantitative report, meaning you cannot expect to learn how widespread this mold is, only the mold’s name and assurance of the area of visible testing.  If the results turn out to be a toxic black mold, the best bet would be repeat tests or perhaps professional analysis and removal.   Always keep in mind that Do it yourself mold testing kits are a first step.

If you have no visible mold to gather for analysis but would like to check for airborne toxins, there are test methods for your air conditioning and heating systems that test the air that you are breathing.  After analysis you can then locate the the highest level of concentrated mold, thus locating the source of the contamination.

A rule of thumb for mold removal and whether or not you yourself can do it or if hiring professionals is needed is whether or not the contaminated area is above five square feet.  If the contaminated area is above five square feet then a professional removal is recommended.

Last but not least is understanding that not all mold is dangerous.  Black mold can be simply cosmetic, as is often the case of mold found on lumber.  This can be deduced from the microscopic testing at the lab where you sent your sample.

Stopping a problem before it spreads is a matter of having the initiative, information and tools to diagnose and correct it before it becomes a costly endeavor.  Doing it yourself is definitely a viable option for most homeowners, a sort of preventive maintenance that can alleviate the worries and financial burden of unchecked mold growth.   A smart homeowner understands that a do it yourself test is the first step only, but by taking this first step yourself you can save time, money and your health.
