In the early nineteen hundreds, furniture was just that… large overstuffed couches, solid pieces that were very heavy, and dark woods and colors were used. Through the years, furniture has changed dramatically. You can still find the early furniture styles, but now there are so many more options to choose from. Unusual shapes and designs can bring added appeal and dimension to your home. You can choose from hundreds of chairs and couches of varying sizes and weights, from very light to very heavy. Some modern furniture may use steel or PVC pipes and tubes to act as a frame, making the pieces very easy to carry and move because they are light. Tables and stands can be made from wood, laminates, veneers, plastics and resins, or other materials. One common modern theme is glass and metal. This is actually a futuristic vision at times, and can give your home a sterile and modern look. Glass and metal coffee and end tables, shelving units, and other furniture can be softened by adding some plants and artwork.
If you want a cozy turn of the nineteenth century look and appeal, add a
fireplace and some substantial furniture. A few throw rugs, some lace doilies on the table tops, and paintings and sculptures from this era can give your home a nice romantic scene from the past. Mirrors and paintings can play a big part in interior design by adding that extra special touch, and this has held true over the last millennium. Paintings can be a terrific way to add some color and contrast to a room, especially if it is mainly one or two colors. Mirrors can add brightness and help to open up small rooms, and they are used much more now than they have been in the past. These can be found in almost any shape and size today.
Currently borders, paint, and wallpaper are popular wall covering options, but paneling, cloth, metal foil, and other options can be found. In the past, the colors of paint you could find were very limited, and may have been as few as five or ten colors. Today you can take a paint chip or sample to most paint stores and get an exact color match in just seconds. You can also use these same services to custom create a paint color for your home. This allows you to use some of the same tones throughout the house while changing the colors used with them. Paints are now a higher quality, and they require less care and last longer.
Some paints are specifically designed and created to resist dirt and marks, and to be easily wiped without the paint coming off or getting wet. Future wall coverings may be even more attractive and easy to care for. There are thousands of colors, designs, and prints of wallpaper to choose from today, many more than there were one hundred years ago, and the application process has become much simpler and more convenient.
In the past, storage and convenience were not as important in interior decorating and design as they are today. This aspect will probably become more important in the future, as the world population rises even more and each person has less space. There are attractive and creative ways to store and showcase your items that can improve the look, convenience, and efficiency of your home. Modern shelving, storage units, and other options can allow you to keep your home neat and clutter free, so it always looks beautiful. A hundred years ago most Americans did not own one fourth of what the average American owns today, so neat and efficient storage is important in the interior design plan and process.
The advances that have occurred in interior design in the last millennium is amazing, and the future shows great promise as well. Memory metals and foams, new substances for furniture and home components, and even advances in paints and new plants will have a big impact on interior design. New concepts may also emerge that help with item placement and energy flow. Interior design is all about making your home exactly how you want it, and in the last millennium the number of options in this area has just skyrocketed. From inexpensive artwork and knickknacks to the availability of high quality furniture that is gorgeous, decorating your home even on a budget has become much easier. Furniture can now be stain resistant, so it is children and pet friendly. Who knows, future technology advancements may make furniture which actually repels dirt and debris so it never needs to be cleaned. When you look at the past one hundred years of interior design and actually see how far this area has come into the modern day, imagine the possibilities that will exist one hundred years from now concerning interior decorating and home design. Your home can be beautiful no matter what you are willing to spend. Whether you prefer a look that is futuristic, modern, or historic it is possible and can be done with a little planning and some professional help. You do not have to settle for a look you do not love.
