Why Test Your Water Quality

Print

There is no such thing as pure water. All the water available in this world has minerals and other impurities mixed into the water supply but just because our water is not pure, does not mean our water is bad to drink. Unfortunately due to pollution and industrial contaminants sometimes the water that comes into our homes is actually a lower quality product than we would like.

Are you interested in learning more about the water quality in your home? If so, you should consider testing your water. When you test your home’s water you can uncover many issues with your water supply that you may not have even been aware of. Did you know that minerals in your water supply can stain your clothing during the wash? Some water contaminates never visibly appear anywhere, never provide a taste, yet slowly cause harm to your body and testing your water is the only way to discover these impurities.

If you live in a municipal water system, your water is currently being tested by the supplier. Federal law requires water utilities to monitor and test the water they sell in order to ensure they are providing a safe water supply. But the water is tested at the source and it still has to travel through the water pipes and into your home. Testing the water as it comes into your home and comparing to the city reports will give you a good idea of what your water is going through as it travels to your home.

If you have a private well, it is essential to test your water source at least yearly. You need to be aware of anything dangerous in your water. If the water from your well changes color or taste drastically, test your water immediately. Heavy rainfall can backwash into your well and contaminate your well with bacteria and chemicals from soil runoff. You may wish to test your well water after the first major storm of the season to confirm that no containments have entered your water supply.

Testing your water can be as simple as purchasing a home testing kit or as complex as hiring a water testing company. If you live in a municipal area you may want to try a home testing kit before hiring a company because most major water testing is already being completed by your water supplier. However, if you have your own well, you should have your water professionally tested once a year.

Being aware of the quality of the water in your home will help you to make many healthy choices. If your city is unable to provide the level of quality in your water that you desire, you will be able to supplement your drinking water with purchased bottled water. However, if your water supply tests to the level of quality that you want, you will be able to save the money you were spending on water and spend it on other items around the house.
