Architecture is a form of art and overall, architectural style helps people classify the art of a building in terms of form, techniques, materials, time period and region. There are hundreds of different architectural styles, in fact each calendar year brings about a different style. But in general, architects work in one of four different main architectural styles.
Classical style is architecture based upon ideas from Classical Greece. Domed buildings, ornate columns, brackets, and arches are all popular examples of classical architecture. You can always spot classical architecture because of its symmetrical design. Everything is symmetrical from the door, to the fireplace, and every room in the home. Natural motifs such as flowers and people are also used in the classical style. If your driving down the road and see a symmetrical house with flower designs on it, you are looking at a classical style of architecture.
Gothic architecture is currently not as popular as the the classical style. Most people think of the great cathedrals of Europe whenever the topic of Gothic architecture is brought up. Gothic styling brought about the point arch, tall spaces with vaulted ceilings, large windows, and ornate decorations. Today’s homes that have large vaulted ceilings and grand picture windows are modern interpretations of Gothic style architecture.
Modern architecture is a style that is constantly evolving, and the basic idea behind the modern style is still open to interpretation by architects. Modern architecture is the most current style and most modern architecture buildings were designed and built after World War II. Because modern architecture is so new it is hard to actually determine what the elements of design are, however, most modern architecture is characterized by simple sleek forms and the lack of any ornamentation.
Asian architecture has taken shape in China and Asia for centuries and the structural principles have not changed since the beginning of time. Asian architecture always has a horizontal emphasis and in particular, the construction of a heavy platform or base and a large roof that appears to float over the base. In Asian style architecture the vertical is down-played and many times vertical walls appear to be non-existent. Architecture that has an asian influence today will usually have the building surrounding an open yard or court yard, a large protruding roof, and curtain walls or door panels to break up interior space instead of classic European doors.
Whatever style of architecture you choose for your new home, you want to make sure that your home’s architecture meets your needs and desires. Many homes combine aspects of several different architectural styles and blend the components into one cohesive design. When working with an architect to design your new home, take the time to discuss the styles you like and what you envision your new home to look like. A good architect will take this information and will also incorporate current home ideas to make your new house not only a place you want to live for many years to come but a home that has resell value.
