Studies have shown that moving is one of the most stressful things that you will ever do, and that’s no surprise when you consider that moving is really about up rooting your entire life and changing it. It stands to reason that you’ll want to have some kind of plan to help you, and it’s a good idea to get all the helpful hints that you can before you even consider moving.
One of the biggest considerations is of course the expense. And of the biggest expenses, beyond the moving company, is the materials that you decide on to package your belongings. There are a variety of things that are available to help you package your valuables in a safe manner—everything from a variety of cardboard boxes to shrink and bubble wrap can be used. There have been several advances in cardboard boxes and one of these that bears a special mention is the one designed for dishes and glass.
Available from most companies that deal in moving supplies, these boxes come equipped with dividers that keep all these breakables separate. These partitions are extra strength and most will fit standard dinner plates. Another type of box is called the wardrobe and one of these makes the move from one closet to the another much easier. The wardrobe box comes with a reinforced corrugated rod to hang the clothes so there’s no need to fold them away.
When everything is packed away and ready to go, it just needs to be put on a truck for the move. Unless you’ve got a very small house and lots of friends with trucks of their own, you’ll need to hire a mover to do the job for you. Hiring someone to do this type of work is in some ways just like hiring and other kind of professional to do work for you—one of the first things that you’ll need to do is find out about the company that you’re thinking of hiring and one of the best ways to do that is to ask them for references.
Of course, if they flat out refuse to give you any, it’s time to start looking around again. However, if they are straightforward, you’ll want to see how each one fairs when it comes to customer relations. If possible, it’s a good idea to talk to some of the former clients as well to see how the company handles itself if there are any disagreements, and what kind of people they send to your home to gather your furnishings on the moving day. You should start shopping the same way you would as with anything else, by making a comparative list of the prices and services that each company offers.
