The Flooring in that Fixer Upper Home

When you start looking for that new home, you’ll often notice that the flooring takes the biggest beating and often needs the most repair. Vinyl floors are popular for a number of reasons including the fact that they’re easy to clean and maintain, and some of the more modern choices don’t require anything other than you sweep them and mop them once in a while.

However, these floors, like everything else, are subject to wear and tear which will be noticeable as something that needs to be changed in a home that generally has other things that classify it as a fixer upper. Repair methods for this vinyl flooring often depend upon the type of floor as well as the type of damage. With vinyl tiles, it’s best to replace the individual tiles and with a sheet of vinyl, it’s possible to fuse the surface or patch in the new material.

Small cuts and other similar abrasions can be fused with one of a number of liquid sealers that are available and these can generally make the crack invisible to the naked eye. The first step to doing this properly is the preparation work, and here, that means you want to clean the floor with lacquer cleaner and wait until it’s absolutely dry before you continue on.

When this cleaner dries, squeeze just a bead of this cleaner into the scratch or crack as the case may be. For areas that have been torn or burned, you should cut out the damaged area and glue in a patch from matching flooring. Remember that vinyl flooring is one of the more popular kinds and as such you’ll be able to find a wide selection in most home renovation places that often includes varieties that are designed to look like hardwood and other flooring products that cost a lot more.

When the flooring is badly worn or the damage is widespread, the only option is complete replacement. Although it is possible to add layers of flooring in some of the fixer upper homes that you will look at, the savings of buying one of these homes needs to be evaluated against the cost of replacing the flooring. Remember that if the family that lived in the place before you had children or pets, the damage might not be contained to one room or even one floor of the house.

If you decide to go with a total replacement, there are certain tools that you will need to get the job done right. It’s important to use the right tools since things like the right scraper and a good knife will make the endeavor much easier and the finished product much more attractive.
