The Absence of a Functioning Gutter

Anyone who has ever had a basement flood knows that a wet basement can cause a whole host of problems. A basement that gets wet frequently or stays moist can allow mold to grow, including toxic mold, and it can ruin any furniture or items that are stored in the areas that flood. Your gutter and leader system are a crucial part of your home, because this water drainage system will keep your basement dry. The system helps to direct the flow of water from the roof and top of your home to the ground, and away from the foundation and exterior of the home. If every piece of this system is not in place and in great shape, water may be able to flow down the side of your home, or even get into the walls from water buildup on the roof. The condition of the gutter, leader, all sections and all drainage pipes should be checked at least once a year and preferably twice, once in the spring and once in the fall.

A thorough water drainage inspection should include several factors. Look over every piece and section of the drainage system. Check for any holes or other damage. Make sure that all the sections connect correctly and tightly. Look for any broken or loose brackets, which could allow water to escape from the drainage system and get on or in the house. You also need to look for any rust or corrosion, especially if certain materials like steel or copper are used in the gutter or leader system. A drainage system should be in good working order and condition, otherwise the water is not correctly directed away from the home and this can lead to wet areas in your home, including the basement. A thorough inspection should include all areas of the gutter, all downspout pipes and extensions, and any splash blocks or drain lines which are underground. All of these components are crucial for the rain and water to be directed away from the home.

A gutter and leader system which does not function properly can cause a number of problems. Water, and ice in the colder months, can back up against the fascia and get under the shingles on the roof. Soffit can become damaged because of this backup and accumulation, and siding materials on the homes exterior can deteriorate or become discolored and unpleasant to look at. Water can collect around the foundation of the home, entering the foundation and basement area. This can lead to a basement that is always damp, and will develop an unpleasant smell and possibly mold contamination. If your gutters and leaders are correctly installed, in good condition and functioning correctly, water should not leak into your basement.

If the gutter and leader system is not functioning well, this can cause the problems previously mentioned. There are several reasons that these systems may not be functioning correctly. In the fall leaves and twigs, as well as other debris, can fill up the gutters and pipes, causing them to become clogged. The water will overflow off to the sides and back up. In the winter and spring, ice dams and snow blockages can be common causes of the gutters and leaders not functioning properly.

A wet basement and roof damage are not the only problems that can happen if the gutters and leaders do not function correctly. The soil around your home can become eroded from water damage, the foundation can crack or become displaced and this can be one cause of a wet basement, wood can become rotted by water damage, paint may crack or blister due to moisture or water, mortar joints can become worn down, and cracks can appear in cement and asphalt structures like driveways, walkways, and patios.

Gutter screens and helmets can be installed to help your gutter and leader system keep from getting clogged, because these accessories prevent any larger items into the gutters and pipes, where they can become stuck. When inspecting and cleaning the drainage system on your home, make sure to use a hose and flush out all the downspouts and other pipes to make sure they are clear. Keeping your gutter and leader system functioning correctly will minimize maintenance and repairs, which can become very expensive if water gets into your home causing damage.
