Storage Ideas

Even though there is usually a fair amount of room in any house, most people who own one are surprised with the amount of things that they are able to gather up after they’ve been in a place for some time. The garage and the basement are two of the biggest stations where things often get waylaid, and after collecting things there for some time, it’s generally a great idea to take stock of the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ that gets things cluttered up and the things that we can do about it.

The experts suggest that one of the first things that you can do is identify your style. It’s important before you start to organize things that you find out how you’ll want to arrange them. Ask yourself what kind of system will make the most sense to you and what is the method for organization that you will find the easiest to maintain. After that, you’ll be ready for the various kinds of containers that you will need.

Boxes and baskets are two of the most common types. Here it’s important to remember that these boxes should look good no matter where you decide to put them and to that end it’s quite often a good idea to get the kinds of containers that are of the same shape and size. That way they’ll look good if the final storage destination is a bookshelf or some other place that will be in plain view. As well, you’ll want to find and use all the hidden drawers and niches in your home. Here, no stone should be left unturned. A coffee table with a few drawers is an excellent place to stash a few items that you might not need right away.

One of the other techniques that you might want to use to store things is to put them on display. Sometimes, the items that had been earmarked for storage look great in a glass display case after a second look. It’s also important to label and categorize things as this will save you from having to look for them when you really need them later.

Built in storage is another option. You can save floor space by building a storage unit against a wall. If you’ve ever been in a warehouse then you know that the idea for the best storage plans go vertical and not horizontal — when was the last time you saw a shelving unit that went long instead of high? Imagine all the things that you can store with a unit in the bedroom. There are limitless possibilities if you use your imagination and think out side of the traditional places that you associate storage with, like the living room and basement.
