Steps for Cleaning Your Homes Gutters and Leaders

An individual’s gutter system disposes of many gallons of water from the outside of their home and foundation every year, bringing about the reasoning for semi annual inspections and cleaning of gutters. All gutters need to be sloped toward their opening for water to properly drain away from the home. Any standing water is usually the main cause of gutter problems. You can check the draining of your home’s gutter system by pouring water into the gutter and watching for any possible problem areas. It would be best to check your gutters and to remove any possible debris at every change of the seasons, especially at the beginning of spring, when large amounts of rain will begin and at the end of fall, where there are leaves and sticks that may cause blockage. Also, be aware of any rust or low spots, where the water may stand, while removing debris. This is a great time to catch a problem before it leads to an even greater expense. If you seem to find sags or low areas of your gutters, these can be fixed just by lifting the gutters a little bit. Also, it is wise to be aware of any possible loose hangers. These can be fixed by bending with a pair of pliers or even by installing some extra hangers. A well maintained gutter system will protect the siding of your home, and help keep your basement dry. This small act will save you a lot of time and money for down the road and years to come.

Below is a list of steps that will be a helpful way to maintain your gutter system. Make sure you study the steps first and understand them before you begin.

1. Remove any and all debris in your gutters. Debris can cause many clogs in your gutters and downspouts. The debris will hold any water, which causes rust, corrosion and rotting. A broom handle or some form of stick would be a great way to clear gutters from debris. Also, using a wire bristled brush of some form, would be best to ensure you clean the gutter from as much debris as possible.
2. Wash the gutters out with a hose. Begin to spray the gutters at the highest point of the roof and work your way down to the gutter’s opening.
3. Blast out any possible blockage. Usually you can force out any blockage with enough water pressure from your hose. This can also be done with a plumber’s snake as well, whatever you prefer and is convenient. If this step is not taken, you may then have to take apart downspouts, causing even a greater task than what may be necessary.
4. Be sure to scrape the gutters. Completely scraping gutters will allow you to fix any rusting spots and problem areas of your gutter system. After scraping the gutters, you can then apply a coat of roofing cement.
5. Last, sand and seal any wood gutters. It is best to sand wooden gutters down to the bare wood, and apply linseed oil, let dry and then apply roofing cement after.

Now with the proper maintenance of your home’s gutters, and the following of these five quick and easy steps, you will save lots of valuable time and money.
