Getting all the hot water that you need in your home has become much simpler as time goes by. There are several options that you can choose from and when you decide to go with the solar option to heat the water in your home, there is even a bit of a remodeling job that will need to take place so that the panels and other accessories that need to be installed will be able to work properly.
The sun can provide up to 50% of the annual hot water needs that the average home will need. Still the experts caution that it is not worth the cost of the electricity produced by solar cells to heat an immersion. They say that the direct heat of the sun is better used to heat the water via a direct solar water heater. This type of solar water heater consists of the common solar collectors that are essentially absorbent black collecting plates that are in constant contact with a series of copper pipes. When these plates are covered with glass their output increases in the same way that a greenhouse collects warmth and they work even better when they are insulated on the back as well.
The whole process uses more common elements than you might think. A fluid that generally consists of a water and antifreeze mix circulates in these pipes and the insulated pipes connect the solar panels to a hot water storage tank. The sun heats the fluid that is circuiting in these panels and this heat is then transferred to the water in the tank via a heat exchanger.
Usually the tank itself is stored inside the house. There is also quite often an amount of remodeling that will need to be done in the attic, crawlspace or basement to allow for the pipes and perhaps even the heat exchanger and the hot water tank. Depending on the position of the collector and cylinder there are two different types of operation that are possible. There are also a few tips that will ensure that these collectors work in the best manner possible but one of the most important is the direction that the system faces in.
To work in the best possible manner, a solar heating system should face south and be angled at 30 degrees, although there are other acceptable variations that pertain to individual areas. As well, to make the best possible use of the solar panels they can be planned for when you are replacing the roof so that you get optimum exposure. Of course when you are selecting the placement of the solar heater, you need to remember that it will not be as efficient when placed on the outside of the house or even on the terrace.
