Nothing inspires relaxation and a refreshing break from the heat like a backyard pool! So how does one go about getting this backyard oasis, and it is complicated?
Well, it can be complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. You can hire someone to do all the work for you, or you can purchase a do-it-yourself pool kit that requires minimum outside work.
If you hire a contractor to do the work for you, you can plan on either an in-ground or above-ground pool. Financing is available from most pool companies. Whether you choose an above-ground pool (which is less expensive) or an in-ground pool, the company you order from should obviously include installation with their services. If they don’t, be wary.
If you choose to order a pool kit, you will have to hire a contractor to dig the area for the pool to go into. A person can do all of the work by themselves, but they will have to be knowledgeable in certain areas, like excavating, establishing grade and elevation, etc. Obviously, it will be a lot more work and both do-it-yourself pool kits and hiring a pool company should be weighed and considered carefully to determine which one is more affordable, which one is better for the size and type of yard you have, and generally which one is better suitable for your needs.
Once the pool is installed and completed, you must clean and maintain the pool. It is recommended that these steps are completed on a weekly basis: skim the top of the water with a net to clear it of any debris; clean the skimmer and pump basket; test the levels of chemicals in the pool (chlorine, pH, and alkalinity), and check the filter pressure to determine if it needs cleaning. Of course, you will want to read the owner’s manual carefully for further cleaning instructions and tips.
One can always hire a pool cleaner, but if one chooses to do the maintenance and cleaning themselves, it should be noted that there is monthly and yearly maintenance, too. The area around the pool needs to be cleaned once a month, or sooner if needed and the mastic needs to be checked and repaired as necessary.
Deciding on which pool is right for you will depend upon the size of your yard, your budget, and what design you feel will work best for its use.
Of course, safety always needs to be top priority. The pool should be fenced in, especially if you have children, and the fence should be locked at all times when not in use. Nobody should ever swim alone, no electronic appliances should ever be kept around the pool, and every member of the family should learn CPR. Naturally, there are other pool safety rules that will have to be practiced.
Having a pool can be a lot of work, but it can also be a lot of fun. Continue to do your research and buy with care.
