Have you always dreamed on having a garden but do not have a large area of land to plan in? Has the idea of creating a self-sufficient garden always interested you, maybe you dream of yourself living on a farm and growing your own vegetables. Stop dreaming, if you live in an apartment and have no dirt at all to dig in, you can create a garden to feed your family.

To get started with your gardening project, you need containers to hold soil and water. Look around your home and your garbage for possible items to use. Reusing containers is easy but avoid items that held dangerous chemicals and poisons. Clean and disinfect any containers you find and poke a couple of holes in the bottom to allow excess water to drain.

You will need to purchase potting soil suitable for vegetables from your local garden shop. Verify that the soil you use is a quality product that is actually safe for vegetables if you plan on eating the products you grow. Some soils are filled with additives that will help flowers bloom with vibrant colors but you do not want to eat foods grown in the same soil.

One great additive to add to your new soil is natural compost. You can purchase compost from many healthy gardening or health food stores. If you are so inclined, you can also make your own compost from your kitchen waste. Making your own compost can be a long and difficult process but if you have the space and really want to create a self-sufficient garden, you may want to give composting a try.

After you have the soil and compost, you need to purchase seeds for your vegetables. Some vegetables require a lot of dirt and a lot of land to grow but there are just as many vegetables that will grow in your small space container garden. Look for seeds that can be planted close together and in shallow soil such as small broccoli, cabbage, container tomatoes, and lettuce. There are also many varieties of vegetables that have been bread specifically for container and small space gardening. Have you ever considered growing corn on your balcony? Now you can with small stalk corn.

To plant your vegetables follow the instructions provided with your seeds. It is best to mix your soil and compost together, put the mixture in your containers, and start watering the soil about two days before you plant your seeds. You want to allow the compost to start enriching your soil before your seeds are planted. Once you’ve planted the seeds follow the instructions provided for watering and caring for your new vegetable garden.

After you have mastered the art of container vegetable gardens and are successfully feeding your family home grown organic vegetables every summer at half the cost of your local grocery store, why not branch out and start a fruit orchard as well. There are many varieties of fruit trees and bushes that grow very nicely in small containers. Before you know it, you may be on your way to becoming a farmer in the city.
