Shopping for Dining Room Tables

Your dining room table may be one of the most used pieces of furniture in your entire home. Just think about it, besides a location to eat your family meals, your table is the makeshift working location for every project that happens in your home. When you need a large area to spread out your paperwork from the office, you’ll be using your dining room table. A quality dining room table will likely remain in your home long after every other piece of furniture has been replaced.

To purchase a quality dining room table, you must choose carefully. Your table will be an investment and it is not advisable to rush out and purchase a table in a couple of hours. Take your time, enjoy the process, and know that you purchased the perfect table for you and your lifestyle.

The first step to purchasing a dining room table, is to take measurements of the space where you want to place your table. Make sure you measure each wall in the area and the cross diagonal measurements (from corner to corner) as well. If you have other furniture in the area you should measure the furniture also. Measure everything you can think of, it is better to have too many measurements than not have the right one when you are out shopping.

Next, start visiting every furniture store in your area. You want to look at as many dining room tables as you can find. Even if you think you have a preferred style in mind, look at other styles as well. You may find it helpful to take notes on what you like and dislike about each table. When you find a model that you truly want to live with for years to come, verify that the size will fit into the space you want. You should plan on leaving approximately 48 inches between the table and the wall or other furniture to allow for the chairs to fit properly and to allow traffic to move freely in the room.

Scale of your dining room table is also very important, if you have a large room with large bulky furniture your table should be a style that is large and thick and of course if you have a small space with minimialistic furniture choose a style of table that does not overwhelm the space. If you have several dinner parties a year but have limited space for a large table, consider purchasing a dining room table with expandable leafs. The leafs can be added to the table to extend the length when needed then stored in another location when not needed.

Purchasing a dining room table is an investment that if done correctly can last a life time. When choosing your ideal table consider all possible candidates both subjectively and objectively. Do not purchase a table simply because it matches your current decor, look for a quality made product that can match your current decor and move with you through your next decorating project. Your dining room table is an investment that you will use daily, make it the right investment.
