The laundry room is often the location for the heaviest appliances in the home. Before filling a Saturday with a trip to the department store or appliance specialist to put a down payment on a new washer dryer set, it is prudent to fully work out how the laundry room will function.
First, you need to determine what are your needs and desires for your laundry room. For many former apartment dwellers, in home laundry appliances are the definition of luxury. However, in order to maximize the luxury, you need to think about how much laundry needs to be done on a monthly basis. Most individuals will do one or two loads of laundry per week, even if they leave it all until the end of the month and do it in five consecutive loads on a lazy Sunday. For a two person home this adds up to at least ten loads a month, and maybe more when one counts towels and dish cloths. While most clothes washers and dryers can easily handle this kind of workload, it is good to know your requirements so you do not end up buying an expensive washer and dryer set that is too heavy for your needs. On the other hand, if you expect to do a whole lot of laundry, perhaps for the kids, a light washer and dryer will almost certainly give out early with the extra loads each week.
More important than your needs are the laundry room’s capacities. Some in home laundry rooms amount to little more than a large closet, while others get a huge room, bigger than some laundry-mats. Often, for small spaces, a stacked up washer and dryer system will be the only option. Also, laundry rooms are often the location for large reach-in freezers. Make sure there are adequate power outlets that can handle the heavy amperage required by most laundry appliances.
For dryers, adequate ducts must be routed from the appliance to the outdoors. These are usually pre-installed, but if it is a new laundry room, you may need to install ducts yourself. This is relatively simple and should not cost more than a few hundred dollars. It is important, however, to ensure that the ducts are properly insulated and do not pose a fire risk. If you are unsure, it might be prudent to hire a handyman to install the ducts for you.
In addition to the appliances, most laundry rooms will need space for sorting and ironing tables. This is another reason to plan out your space before making any appliance purchases. Use that tape measure to take some measurements before you go looking at washers and dryers to ensure that you purchase the appliance that is the right fit for your laundry room space.
