Resurfacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Print

Your kitchen cabinets are one of the most prominent features in your entire home. If your cabinets are falling apart or the wrong design for your decorating theme, you may find yourself embarrassed to have guests over. After all, everyone eventually ends up in the kitchen. Even if you do not have a lot of money to spend on new kitchen cabinets, there is help.

Resurfacing your cabinets is an excellent method of improving your kitchens appearance without needing to do any major carpentry. The resurfacing process may be called cabinet re-facing in your area but the process is the same. If your shelves and cabinet housings are in good shape, you simply remove the cabinet drawers and apply whatever treatments you desire. If you have a little money to spend and truly hate your cabinets, you can replace the cabinet doors and drawer faces with entirely new pieces. Do not forget to cover the cabinet frame with a matching veneer if you decide to replace your cabinet fronts. The options for replacement are virtually endless as you can mix and match patterns, woods, and paint colors as you like.

However, if you are strapped for cash, you can choose to resurface your existing cabinet doors and drawers with paint or applied veneers. Many times you may believe your cabinets are too dark and damaged but all they need is a good washing and sanding. Grease and steam from cooking will cause dirt to build up on your cabinets and the only way to make the cabinet doors look new again is to thoroughly clean them with an industrial cleaning agent and a good sanding. After you have cleaned and sanded your cabinets, you can paint them a new color or apply a new coat of stain.

You can redecorate you entire kitchen with a little paint on your cabinets. Choose a new color for your cabinets that either matches or complements your tile and people will think you have an entirely redesigned kitchen. In fact, many people will probably think you have had new cabinets installed. When painting, remember to apply several coats of sealer after the cabinets have been painted the color you want. Any good paint store will be able to assist you with purchasing the correct paint and the correct sealer.

If you are truly daring and want to give your kitchen an entirely new look, you can take the cabinet doors off completely. This of course will leave your shelves open for display, but if you collect fine china or elegant glassware, you can show off the products by removing the doors. You will need to have your cabinets looking organized and neat at all times to truly pull off the no door look but if you have a sleek and modern kitchen you may find having no cabinet doors very appealing.

When the time comes to redecorate your kitchen, you may find that it is not necessary to replace your entire kitchen cabinet assembly. If your shelves are in good condition and the frames are showing no signs of wear and tear, save yourself money and resurface the cabinet doors and drawers instead.
