Once in a while you’ll find that you need a new seal on your refrigerator door and this small repair can save you money and energy costs as well as improve the ability of your refrigerator to keep your food cool regardless of the kitchen temperature. This is not a difficult procedure and with just a few quick tips you can have a seal replaced in a short period of time.
Like everything else in home maintenance, there are a set of steps that you should follow to ensure that this seal is replaced properly. The first involves loosening the retaining screw. Here you start at the top corner of the door and roll back the rubber gasket with one hand. This will expose the metal retaining strip underneath. You will need a screwdriver to loosen the retaining screws that will be found there.
Installing the new gasket is the next procedure and you can start this by pulling the old gasket straight up to free it from behind the loosened retaining strip. With the old gasket hanging out of the way, slide the new gasket behind the retaining strip, starting along the top of the door and working down the two sides. Be sure to tighten the retaining screws as you go. At the bottom of the door, slip out the old gasket at one corner, replacing it with a new gasket before loosening the retaining screws up at the final corner. After this you can complete the last few inches of the installation.
When you finally finished the entire gasket, realign the door by adjusting the retaining screws and their tension. Adjusting the tension of these retaining screws is accomplished by tightening or loosening them until you find that the gasket is straightened. Holding the lower door with your foot during these adjustments will steady the upper door or you can use a helper to help you keep the door squared by holding it.
One of the other problems that you can face is that the drain hole at the bottom of the storage bins, in the storage sections, can become clogged. This is easily fixed with the right information as well. First, you need to pull the plug out and then take a common coat hanger and twist it through the hole to get rid of the obstruction. It is also possible to use a pipe cleaner. Push it through the drain canal into the drain pan below. It’s also possible to use a solution of soapy water and ammonia to flush the blockage out.
There are many quick fixes for the appliances that you’ve got around the home and for the most part, saving yourself a lot of time and money is as simple as getting to know where to look for the information that you’ll need.
