Of course you’ll need exact measurements of the opening before you start the whole process. So although you can pick out the style you want first, the measurements can be attained only after the old window is out.
You can start the process of removing the old window by taking out the inside casing. When you’ve got the rough opening revealed, measure the width which is the distance between the inner edges of the trimmer studs, and the height, which is the distance between the rough sill and the bottom of the header. Take note that the opening might not be square so you might need several measurements. Your new window will be fitted to the narrowest of these measurements.
Although the most common windows nowadays are made from vinyl, there are still many double hung metal and wood framed windows left on the market that need to be addressed since their care is a little more complex. Remember that while the newer windows are almost maintenance free, some of the older wooden models have a style that many people still prefer. When you replace one of these windows, one of the tricks is to be careful as to not cause further damage to trim and framework, and to preserve as much of the wood as possible so that it can be reused.
A double hung window can be taken out from either the inside or the outside as weather conditions and preferences permit. Start by removing the interior window trim and carefully tap a chisel under one edge and carefully pry it out. It’s important that you don’t pry the bottom all they way out but work slowly upwards to avoid breaking the trim. Trim can be quite expensive so it’s in your best interest to preserve as much of it as possible to avoid having to spend money unnecessarily on a trip to the renovation store.
Next you’ll need to push both windows down and if they are hung with sash cords, you’ll need to cut those as well. With a spring loaded balance, you want to twist the top to loosen it. Next you’ll need to pry out the interior stops and then, once you have all that hardware loose, you can gently lift the old window out and away.
