Repairing concrete might seem like one of the more industrious jobs you’ll need to do around your house and one of the first reactions that you might have is to just call a professional, but that’s not always the best maneuver. What may seem like a big job at first might not be as bad as you think. In fact, there are several different techniques for the home renovator to fix their own concrete and save substantial amounts of money.
One of the first things that the experts suggest that you do might seem to be the wrong thing at first but it is suggested that you take a cold chisel and make any crack that you can find in concrete larger. That’s right larger. Although that might not sound like a sensible approach at first there is solid reasoning behind it. You want to create a backward angled cut in the crack itself so that whatever kind of filler that you decide to use will sit in the crack and not run back out.
The next step involves using a wire brush to clean out any of the existing debris that has been left behind. It’s important here to remember that you want the crack as clean as possible before you use any type of repairing agent. Leaving debris in the affected area will only cause problems when you go to blend the repair with the existing concrete. After that, you want to get a paintbrush and apply the first layer of compounding agent. This adhesive prevents the repair material from jumping back up out of the crack.
Once you have a reinforced patching compound mixed, you can trowel it into the crack. It’s a good idea to use a painting technique and feather the compound over the existing concrete to create a blended appearance. Of course one of the places that you’re more likely to find a crack in concrete is in the basement of your house, and for that the experts suggest they you use an epoxy or polyurethane that can fill the crack in and supply a superior bond.
Remember when it comes to the basement that no house escapes a leak here or there. All the experts suggest that it’s not if you’ll find a leak in your basement but when that leak will occur. They also suggest that when it does, it’s always best to be ready with some type of plan for immediate repair.
