Quick Fixes to Toilet Problems

Have you ever been a victim of shower shock? Not like the infamous shower scene from the Alfred Hitchcock classic movie, “Psycho”, but the less violent one when you’re enjoying a nice, hot, relaxing shower and someone in the family flushes the downstairs toilet. Sound familiar, shower shock!

In a busy household, it’s inevitable that a toilet flushing draws cold water away from the shower making for a quick and usually unpleasant temperature change in the water.

A Quick Fix to this problem is to find the water valve to the toilet tank and close it until it is about a one quarter to a one-half turn from completely being shut off. This will slow the rate of the toilet flush. The toilet tank will fill more slowly, but it’s the difference between shower shock and a mild temperature fluctuation.

Low-Flow Toilets are a sure fire way to save on your water bill, but sometimes the toilet simply doesn’t flush strongly enough.

A Quick Fix to this problem is to check the manufacturer’s instructions to set the proper fill line marked inside the tank. If there is no line, keep the water level a half-inch below the top of the overflow tube inside the toilet tank.

The Toilet Tank is dripping and you’re unsure if the water is coming from a bad seal or simply from harmless condensation on the tank.

A Quick Fix to this problem is to drop some food coloring onto the toilet tank to see if the color reaches the floor beneath the tank, if so, check the tank for cracks and check the piping for loose connections.
