Quick Fixes For The Dishwasher

Print

There are a few appliances in the home that we traditionally think of as the ones that we can call a repair man for and the dishwasher is one of them. Dishwashers are designed for the most part to be one of the more durable appliances in the home and to that end we think of them as relatively low maintenance. Replacing defective door gaskets is often all that you need to do to stop leaks but clogged water lines usually present one of the more serious problems that you can encounter.

One of the first places that you’ll want to look at if you’ve got that problem is the drain hose. If you find that its damaged or has a kink in it that you can’t straighten out, the experts suggest that you replace it. Start by turning off the water supply and the electrical power and then remove the lower panel of the dishwasher. Depending on the model and year, it might be held in place by either screws or retaining clips.

Next you’ll want to place a baking pan or bowl underneath the pump to catch any excess water that flies out during the fix. Loosen the drain hose clamp with pliers or a screwdriver, and then remove the drain hose from the pump. It suggested here that you make sure to have the right tools to accomplish the job properly: many assemblies and hose clamps have been ruined or otherwise damaged when they have been removed using the wrong tool. Next you need to reach underneath the sink and remove the other side of the hose from where it is attached.

After that you can reattach the new hose to the corresponding fixtures and restore the electrical power and the electrical supply to the dishwasher. Remember that although this may seem like an easy and safe job it’s always best to wear the proper safety equipment which includes goggles and gloves. Many people have been unnecessarily injured in the house by thinking that if the job they are doing is only a quick fix, it doesn’t need the proper safety measures.

One of the other fixes that you might need to one day do with your dishwasher is the replacement of a door gasket. That’s the rubber strip that extends around the inside edge of the door, and once again you should start by disconnecting the electrical power. Loosen the retaining screws on the door first and retighten them. The gasket might be fine. However, if you need to replace the whole thing, remove the old gasket first with a screwdriver and then make sure the new one is secured in place before you tighten it in. Soak the new gasket in warm soapy water to make it more pliable before you put it in.
