The Plumbing In Your Home and Moisture

One of the first things that any new homeowner needs to learn, is the fact that water is the enemy, or at least unwanted moisture is the enemy. To control all water related problems you must first eliminate all the sources of unwanted moisture in your home. There are several common plumbing problems that you’ll want to look at, including leaky faucets and water pumps as well as hot and cold water pipes. As these pipes generally run to and from the appliances that use hot and cold water in your home, it’s best to keep them in the best working order possible so that you can lead the green lifestyle and prevent problems down the road.

Water that leaks either from around the body of or through the spout of the faucet can contribute to the moisture that you feel indoors from the process of evaporation and moisture condensation that drips on the floors or cabinet bases. This in turn can rot the base of the cabinets and even in extreme examples decay the flooring.

Here you’ll need to check around the sink and faucets for leaking. Remember that moisture that accumulates under a sink presents an inviting home for some nasty pests like roaches which flourish where ever there is moisture. You should also check the faucets to make sure that they shut off completely and don’t drip at all. It’s also important to know something about each of the types of faucets that you’ve got in your home.

Models are varied and generally there are different types that can suit different rooms in your home. For example, compression faucets and cartridge faucets as well as disc faucets are the kinds that can be found in a variety of places in your home. As these all have different requirements to fix them properly, and it’s important that you know the differences between each and how to repair each as indicated. Often this will mean that a simple trip to the closest home repair store is in order to find out from the local dealer there how best to tackle the problem. There are other places where the feeds to your appliances can cause some problems.

The hoses to the water faucets near the hot and cold faucets that feed the clothes washers is another area that you’ll need to keep an eye on. Leaving these faucets turned on when the water is not in use means that these hoses will be subject to the same water pressure as other pipes in the home and therefore susceptible to the same leakage as these pipes. It’s best if you only turn the lines on when needed, to prevent any damage to these rubber lines which could lead to a flood in the basement and some unwanted expenses.
