Plants For The Non-Gardener

Print

Are you new to gardening but keep forgetting to water the one house plant you currently own. Do you dream of having a lush garden with flowers and vegetables growing every year but dread the thought of having to spend your entire weekend on your hands and knees pulling weeds? Gardening can be a wonderful hobby and there are many plants that do not require constant attention to grow. If you are new to the gardening hobby, why not start out with a few plants for the non-gardener?

Before planting a garden of any kind, think about what you want to achieve. Are you interested in a flower garden that adds character to your landscaping or do you want a functional fruit and vegetable garden that can supply your family with organic home-grown vegetables in the summer and fall. Make a list of what your dream garden will be and start out slow. Gardening is a hobby that will take years.

If you are looking to create a flower garden, one of the easiest flowers to grow is the daylily. The daylily is a yellow summer flower that will grow even if you plant it and forget about it. Daylily’s also bloom from from mid-spring to early-fall which makes them a great backdrop of color for other flowers and plants you add to your garden. To add contrast to the yellow daylily, you may want to include Black-Eye Susan daisy. The Black-Eye Susan daisy is another flower that once you plant it you can forget about it. These two flowers will provide any non-gardener with a wonderful stepping off point in the roadway to a luscious flower garden.

If you are more interested in having a fruit and vegetable garden but do not believe you have a green thumb, grow strawberries. The Sure-crop variety of strawberries is a sure crop. These strawberries will grow as long as you remember to water them on a periodic basis. Imagine having fresh homegrown strawberries for dessert this summer, as long as you allow the strawberries to grow to full size and ripen, you will have a sweet succulent fruit that can not be matched by anything you purchase at the grocery store.

One of the easiest vegetables to grow is the tomato. All tomatoes need is a little sun and a support pole and before you know it you will have more tomatoes than you can eat. Like strawberries, if you actually give the tomatoes enough time to grow to full size and ripen before you eat them, your home grown tomatoes will taste better than anything you purchase in the grocery store.

With very little care you can grow a quality garden that will impress your family and neighbors and start you on your way to becoming more than a non-gardener. Start your new hobby this spring with a few easy to care for plants and expand with new plants every year. Before you know it, your entire yard will be filled with your garden and you will come to love being able to spend the weekend working on your hobby.
