Organize Your Storage Space

Everyone is constantly in search of more storage space in their home. Even the most organized and tidy home has items hidden away in closets or hidden under the table. After you have identified what you need to store and where you want to store it, you need to create a plan to keep the items organized, yet easy to find.

Many people fall into a trap of storing all their items in large boxes. You can label these boxes and store similar items together, but are you able to find the one item you are looking for quickly and without disturbing everything else you have stored? Organizing your storage space requires more than building shelves and storing boxes, it requires you to create a system that will allow you find what you need quickly and easily.

Creating an organized storage space starts with understanding of what you need to store. Have you cleaned your closets out, and truly understand what you have to store? After you have an inventory of what you are trying to store, take a trip to the home improvement store and spend some time reviewing the different possibilities in storage containers. Organization products are available in any good home improvement store and many manufacturers are now creating products in a variety of shapes and sizes.

When choosing the storage boxes you will be using for your organizational system, you may want to avoid purchasing large storage boxes. Instead focus on smaller containers that will only hold a limited amount of items inside each box. Using smaller boxes may actually help you store more items in the limited amount of space you have available. The trick with smaller storage boxes is to label and stack the boxes on top of each other.

You will need to have a variety of storage boxes in order to fit the items you need to store. Choose a storage box that will fit the items you want it to hold but is not overwhelmingly big. If you have storage boxes that are too large, you will be tempted to fill them with extra items and then everything becomes jumbled together. A good rule of thumb for organizing your storage space is that if you can fit more than five items in a box, the box is too big.

Limiting the amount of items you have in a storage box will not only help you find what you want the next time you need it, but you will protect your items as well. Instead of mixing shoes and sweaters together in a jumbled mess, you can protect each item in a box designed to hold the specific item. If you have a problem determining what you should put into a certain box, you may find it helpful to purchase storage boxes that are specifically designed to hold sweaters, shoes, or other items.

By choosing to store and organize your life with small storage boxes you will find it is much easier to find the items you need without having to spend the day searching through boxes. When you can find the items you are looking for, you will start to enjoy the organized storage and you may become the envy of all your friends.
