Older windows present a unique set of moisture problems. Moisture can pass through the side frames that hold the sash cords and pulleys. There are two different things that you can do to combat this problem.
The best way to look after this is to remove both the sash cords and the weights. Once you have all the hardware removed, you’ll need to insulate the cavities with aluminum faced insulation. Make sure to position the insulation so that the aluminum side is facing in. Next, you’ll need to plug the holes in the side frames and replace the trim. The second option is to install a special plastic cover over the holes that will allow the window to operate. These can be purchased at your local hardware store.
For problems with skylights, it’s always best to have the person who installed them or a roofer, to inspect and make any necessary repairs. If the leak is between the skylight and the roof, a roofer is your best bet, as they will be able to improve the flashing around the unit. If the leak is through the structure itself however, your only recourse might be to replace the entire unit. By following proper dehumidifying procedures, it’s possible to reduce interior humidity levels and reduce frost on the inside of windows. Another good tip is whenever you see a buildup of condensation inside of the skylight, is to simply open a close by window to allow the excess moisture to drain out.
Remember that your other option to reduce inside moisture levels is to replace the windows entirely. Besides energy savings from better thermal and air filtration control, window replacement will provide other benefits, like reduced drafts that will improve occupant comfort and a higher resale value.
There are even some wood windows that are still on the market but these come from specialty dealers and are generally cladded with aluminum or vinyl. Still the most popular window on the market today is the vinyl window since it is relatively inexpensive and almost maintenance free. As with any other fairly expensive accessories in your home, a wise business adage says that quality and good design will be remembered long after the prices are forgotten.
Like many other accessories that you buy for your home, shopping for windows is an involved process that should take some time. Check around and compare what the different shops have to offer and don’t assume that all distributors of the same brand name are the same. The key thing to remember here is that not all distributors of the best names provide the same kind of service.
