Location, Location, Location: Is It That Important?

Are you planning on moving in the next few months, but you are not sure where you want to move to? Maybe you want a new pace and a change of scenery, and are teetering between several different places to call your new home. Whatever the reason is that you want to move, the location you choose will have an enormous impact on you and your life, so it is a decision that should be carefully thought out, and not made lightly or for the wrong reasons. The location of your new home will have financial consequences, because the cost of living and normal expenses in some areas may be much higher than other areas. The job market may be different, and in certain areas of the country specific jobs that are in high demand may be different. Before you even decide on a destination, check out the intended location carefully and consider all the relevant factors first. Be honest about your education, work experience, and the current job market in the area. If you choose a location where jobs are scarce and you do not have a lot of experience, you may end up homeless.

Start by creating a list of possible locations for your move. Once you have this list then it is time to do some serious research. With the availability of the Internet, there is no excuse not to find out everything possible about your list of destinations. Look at factors like the crime rate, the typical housing costs and the housing market, the local economy, the demand for jobs in your education and experience range, the cost of living and things like food, doctor visits, utilities, and other typical expenses. Make a list and compare each of these factors for every possible location. This will allow you to see which places are the best, and which locations may not be appropriate for you after all. Once you have done the research, it is time to narrow the list some. If possible get online and find pictures of the towns or cities you are considering. Look at any facilities and amenities for residents in the area, and see which ones are of interest to you.

After you have your possible new locations down to two or three, it is time to reconsider the pros and cons of each individual location. Look at each one again and carefully consider why it is right for you, and what you do not like about it as well. Make a list, with the location advantages on one side and any drawbacks on the other. Compare the lists and see which location offers you the most benefits and advantages with the least number of drawbacks. Once you have finished, do it again. This is important because your choice of destination will have a major impact on your life, and this decision should only be made after careful deliberation. Once you have thought about it a few times, rethink it once more just to verify that you are making the correct choice.

The location you choose will decide the course of your immediate future, and possibly the rest of your life as well. Because of this you should consider every angle very closely several times before coming to a final decision. You may want to take a trip and visit the top two or three on your list, so you can get a feel for the area and the people. This can be very helpful when deciding where to move to and spend the next few years of your life at least.

Your lifestyle and interests can play a part in the location you choose. If you are a night owl and like partying until the early hours in the morning, moving to a farm in the middle of Iowa may not be the ideal place for you to move to. You would probably end up being bored and not enjoying your new life much. The same is true if you enjoy quiet and solitude. If this is your case then living in New York City, the city that never sleeps, would be a mistake and a very bad fit. The best location will be one where you are comfortable, and where the job and housing markets match your needs. There are many different factors that you should consider when deciding where to move, and this decision should be well thought out and debated a number of times before you come to a final location choice.
