Living Room Setup

Whether you call it a couch, a sofa, or a chesterfield, it can fit up to three people at a time, there will be a lot of time spent sitting on it and it can make or break a living room. However, it might be best to take some time to plan out the design of your living room before purchasing any new furniture at all. Make a scale drawing of the space and cut-out separate pieces of paper representing the various pieces of furniture to be placed and interchanged on your scale drawing. This can save a lot of trouble and give you a better idea of how the space will function and look when all is said and done.

First, identify what the centerpiece of the living room will be. For some, their television has a room to itself separate from the sitting room while for others, a T.V. is the definition of the living room. Whether the centerpiece of the room is the television, a fireplace, or simply the centre of the room, it is important to know and see how the room will function.

Next, determine if there are any space restraints. Measure the room to determine how big a couch you can fit and how many other chairs and tables will fit around it. Be aware of the entranceways and doors as they need to be unblocked. It is easy to underestimate the space needed to move around a room. Usually, two or three feet is the minimum amount of access space you can leave between furniture to allow easy passage. If there is a fireplace, its position is clearly fixed and it must be worked around as it would be a disaster to put a piece of furniture to close to the heat. Be sure to note where the power outlets are, as this can determine the placement of the television, stereo, lamps and any other electronic appliances you need to fit into the room.

Once you have the basics covered, you can begin to play with the arrangement. If you are arranging a living room with most of the furniture in place, it can be tricky and tiring moving around the heavy pieces. Try to have a good idea of how the room will function before you move anything. If you watch television often, make sure there are good lines of sight from the main sofa and decent lines of sight from any other loveseats or chairs. If the room is more for entertaining company, have the main sofa face a love seat or a couple of chairs with a coffee table in between. Avoid using the big pieces of furniture from closing off any section in the room.
