Just because the end of the summer is approaching, that doesn’t mean that you should just put your landscaping tools away and forget about the yard and garden until the spring. Far from it. The end of the growing season is a perfect time to scrutinize the landscape around your home and to see what needs to be done in the way of maintenance.
As far as spring garden preparations go, now is the time that you’ll want to get moving on the things that need to be done so that you can enjoy an easy transition into the next planting season. One of the first things that you should look after is dividing up those overgrown perennials now. Not only will this make for a quicker bloom when the time comes back around, but there will be a healthier bloom as well, next spring.
Make sure to clean the wooden debris out of any ponds that you’ve got on the property. Remember that some of the things that you think will decompose over the winter months might just stay frozen and come back as a smelly mess in the spring. That goes for the fallen leaves as well unless you want a muck to deal with when the weather warms up again.
Look after your trees and shrubs. Chances are you’ve taken a lot of time and care in selecting them and placing them in exact locations. Don’t assume that they’re going to be okay all winter long without you giving them a good little send off to the season. Trees and shrubs continue to lose moisture in the winter and to that end you’ll want to give them a deep watering before the really cold weather comes. As well, some of the landscaping in your yard might need a little Fall pruning before the winter.
Particularity the shrubs that flower in the spring should be pruned early so that the developing buds that are about to come along for the next season have a chance. It’s also a good idea in these environmental times to find a good use for everything that you have in your yard. Hopefully there won’t be much waste that you’ll need to throw out and to that end you can take the leaves that you rake up and use them as an excellent mulch for the flowerbeds.
Remember too that if you don’t have the time to look after the Fall maintenance work yourself, it’s best to hire a professional landscaper to help you along with it. There are many different companies that will only be too happy to help you out and if you scour the local directory, phone book, or Internet, the chances are you’ll find the right one for your needs.
