It's Best To Be Organized

In previous moving articles we discussed planning and packing in advance to reduce stress from the actual moving day. Let us not forget the importance of your pets. If you are moving to a different state or country, do your research and make sure your pets’ vaccinations are up to date for the state or country you are moving to. When you bring an animal across country lines many checkpoints will require proof of vaccinations, including rabies. So have this paperwork at hand and ready to present to the officials at the borders.

Speaking of paperwork — you don’t want to arrive at your new home only to find that the important paperwork, the ones that contain all the necessary information to steal your identity, are gone. Again, this applies to both those who are hiring movers and those who are doing the work themselves. If possible, keep the information with you at all times. And by “with you” I mean either in your hand or within your sights. It is always a good idea to invest in a waterproof and fireproof safe, and moving makes the perfect excuse for the cost. Your personal information is invaluable so make sure to treat it as such.

On the day you move, don’t wear flip-flops. Make sure to wear clothing that is safe and comfortable and durable against hours of lifting, bending, and carrying. Wear shoes that will not skid, that will support the ankles, and that are comfortable. And since we are on that subject, don’t pack your boxes too heavily. It might seem convenient at the time you are packing them, but heavy boxes are far from convenient when you are trying to carry them from inside the truck, down the metal slide out, across the lawn, and up the stairs to the bedroom.

On the moving day, dress for the weather! If it is winter, dress in layers so that when you really get going you can take off one layer at a time so that you don’t get too hot or too cold. If you are moving during the summer, wear something that will help keep you cool, and try to schedule the move for either early in the morning or in the early evening when temperatures will be cooler and you will still have enough sunlight to see what you are doing.

I realize that a lot of this will seem like common sense, but moving is stressful and you will more than likely find yourself heaped with stuff to remember. Right all of this stuff down now so that you can simply look at your list rather than trying to remember all of the details through your muddled “I’ll never move again” mind.
