Interior Decorating – Purchasing Carpets

When you’re trying to decide on what kind of carpet that you want to buy, two of the concerns that you need to look at are color and pattern. Remember that lighter shades and colors show dirt more readily while the darker colors don’t show as much dirt but they make the room look smaller.

Of course, the carpet’s durability is affected by the materials that were used to make it up — it’s good to plan ahead and match up certain kinds of materials with the areas where you plan to use them. For example, a top quality fiber will always last longer in the hallway and other high traffic areas. As well as the kinds of materials used, the way in which a carpet is constructed impacts resistance to wear and tear. The width of a roll might affect the style of carpet that you decide to buy as well — a roll that will cover an entire area without the need for seams is a good find.

The type of carpet that you select will also determine the kind of padding that you use. It’s a good idea here to check with the manufacturer’s recommendations and it’s also a good idea to use the best padding that you can since the padding and the carpet work together to provide the overall effect. As well as making the carpet feel more plush, the padding acts as a noise insulator and makes the floor warmer as well.

As well as knowing what kind of padding is best for your carpet, it’s good to know a thing or two about what goes into the construction of a carpet as well. The very top part of the carpet is called the pike and it consists of the yarn loops that are pushed up through the backing material. Depending on the effect that the manufacturer wants, these loops are left as is or cut by the manufacturer. The pile density will tell you about the quality of the carpet that you are considering. Remember that a carpet that sports a good density will resist crushing and staining better than a carpet with a low density.

There are other things that you need to consider as well. Some carpets have a foam backing to it and this eliminates the need of additional backing—this type is easy to install because it doesn’t require stretching or tackless strips. However, this kind of carpet generally costs less than other carpets because it’s generally of lesser quality material. Loop-pile carpet has a textured look created by the rounded ends of uncut yarn loops pushed up through the backing. These loops are either arranged randomly or made into a distinct pattern.
