Interior Decorating For Your Living Room

The living room, sitting room, family room, or den is, more than any other, the room of the house in which the owner gets to show off his or her own personal style. From an interior decorating perspective, it is the room where all the fun can be had.

The first thing to consider when designing the interior decor of a living room is the color of the paint job. Dark colors are dangerous and should be avoided. While a black wall might sound like a good idea and even look good to the painter’s eye after the work is finished, in the long run, dark rooms grow dreary and detract from the living conditions in the space. Moreover, if you are planning to sell the home before re-painting, dark colors such as black or dark reds and blues, will ultimately reduce the value of the home. When it comes to painting the living room, it is best to go with lighter, neutral colors such as beige, off-white, yellow, or perhaps light shades of blue, purple or red.

After you have decided upon a color for the living room, the color and style of the furniture can follow. Generally, you want the colors of the main pieces of living room furniture, the couch, the chairs and the coffee and side tables, to blend well with the color of the walls. Beige walls do well with brown and earth toned furniture, for instance. And while black walls might be a bad decision, black or dark colored furniture is a perfect contrast to white walls. Light shades of color on the wall, such as light blue, go well with light shaded furniture. Similarly, wood paneled walls will look best around wooden furniture pieces.

While the carpet is perhaps even more important than the walls, replacing a carpet or installing carpet where none existed before can often be too much of a cost burden for a living room face-lift. However, if a new carpet is an option, the color and style of the carpet should be considered before all other options. If, on the other hand, it’s not possible to change the existing carpet in the room, the color of the wall paint and the furniture should be made with the color of carpet in mind. Most carpets are short hair and of a neutral color like beige and are very easy to match with wall paint colors and furniture. However, dark carpets or long haired or old style carpets can often detract from the overall attractiveness of your living room. If the existing carpet is very ugly or out of fashion, replacement may be the only option.
