It is important to remember that the interior walls and ceilings of the structure need to be finished after the exterior walls are done and after the doors and windows have been installed. As well as protecting the inside of the structure from damage, this process makes the building weather tight.
This is important because most interior materials are not weatherproof and they need to be shaded from the elements. As well, interior walls can be finished on bad days when rain or snow makes work on the exterior impractical or impossible.
Like everything else, when it comes to a new construction there is a sequence that needs to be followed. As a rule, ceilings are finished first and then the walls, with the floors completed last. Keep in mind that workers will drop tools and materials as they work; it does no damage to drop tools on unfinished floors.
Walls and ceilings can be finished the same way. This is because the same materials are used on the walls and ceilings and there are several steps that can be involved. It is not uncommon for carpenters to install vapor barriers and other things including insulation, plumbing and electrical wiring. The most common material used for walls is gypsum board, which is made from a chalk blue like paste. When the gypsum hardens it forms a rigid border and a paper cover adds to its strength and durability.
Carpenters use special skills when covering walls and ceilings and these skills are related to working with various materials. Some of the skills the carpenters use to prepare interior walls include:
* installing insulation
* putting up paneling
* preparing walls for plaster
* installing ceiling materials
As a rule, ceilings are done before walls and floors. The carpenter usually does not select the interior materials, however they must plan the way in which the work is to be done. To do this properly, the carpenter must know the various processes involved. He must be able to:
* Make sure the material and the fasteners are available
* plan the correct work sequence
* install trim and moldings
* Install the insulation into the walls
Today, nearly all exterior walls are insulated and insulation is also commonly used in interior walls. Internal insulation reduces sound transmission between rooms or apartments. This insulation must be put in before the walls are installed. Most of today’s insulation is made from loose woven fibers and the material comes in standard rolls or in store strips. Most of these rolls are made to fit between the wall studs and they are made in accordance with two commonly used standard widths.
