As we all become more and more conscious of the kind of air quality that we’ve got in our homes, we all see the need to have the best. As well, there are many different things that you can do to ensure that the air in you home is circulating properly but one of the most important is to make sure that you’ve got a good thermostat.
A home thermostat is a temperature sensitive switch that controls the furnace or air conditioner. Some of the models that you can get include a thermostat, clock and timer. They may also have separate controls for heating cooling and fan operation, and the most sophisticated models are the ones that are programmable electronic models.
A room or central thermostat never needs more than a cleaning unless it is defective. To deal with the dust and dirt, it is necessary that you remove the front cover first; most of these just snap off and they come off at the bottom first. Remove the dust with a small can of compressed air or a flexible brush. You can also clean exposed contacts by drawing a piece of white paper between them.
To check the connections themselves, take out the mounting screws in the front assembly and remove it from the wall plate. Tighten any loose wire terminals. Remember too that a mercury level thermostat must be level in order to operate properly and frequent handling and the occasional bump can knock a thermostat out of alignment.
If a thermostat starts the furnace at something other than the temperature that you set, then you must recalibrate it. With some models, there is a calibration wrench to turn the nut up behind the bimetal coil left or right as marked. With some older models, you’ll need to turn the shaft at the center of the coil with a screwdriver.
Replacing the existing thermostat is easier than you may think. All the experts suggest that if you want to get rid of the thermostat that you have now, it’s advisable to buy yourself a programmable one and install it in the other’s place. Remember that the thermostat that you buy will need to match your system, so make sure to take the model numbers with you when you go shopping for an upgrade. Make sure as well to get a model with a manual override.
