A home security system can be the most effective defense against robbery and home invasion. Often, just the garden sign of a prominent security company stuck into the grass of the front lawn will be enough to ward off would-be thieves. However, there are some easy steps you can take towards securing your home against intrusion. A high tech security system is a good route to take to secure your home, but most often, common sense and a consistent lock-up routine are the most effective defense.
Obviously, door locks are the front line against any home intrusion. Dead bolts are the favorite for most home owners as they just feel sturdy and secure. Certainly, chain locks, as found in many apartments are practically useless are far as keeping out people that are determined to get in, are concerned. While a good push will not always break most chain locks, unless the chain is heavily fastened to the wall, most fixtures will tear out of their door frame when heavy shoulder check is administered to the door. Usually, a combination of a deadbolt and a locking door handle will be sufficient to secure the door against intruders. However, be sure that all the doors are equally secured, as often, the front door is not the one used by thieves to enter a residence. Beyond locks, the security of the entrance to your home can be enhanced by simple accessories such as a “davie bar”, a steel rod that can be adjusted to wedge between the door handle and the floor to provide nearly perfect protection against the door opening.
The windows on any home are often the most vulnerable points of the structure. Not only are they glass, but the locking mechanisms on most windows are inadequate to prevent their being “jimmyed” or just forced open. The most common window security mechanism is a simple wooden or metal rod placed along the window’s track preventing the glass from moving to the open position. If your house is in a particularly high crime neighborhood, it might be wise to add bars to the ground level windows.
Electronic home security can often be more effort than it’s worth. However, if it is something that you must have in your home, buy a system with two-way voice communication. This ensures you will get an immediate response from local law enforcement rather than just a silent alarm.
Home security is also a matter of prevention. Try not to show off your possessions. Have your keys out when you go to the door. Be aware of who is around when you leave and return home.
