When most of us think about the average kitchen remodeling job, we think of working on the cabinets and fixtures and more than likely even the floors. But if you’re really thinking about completely changing the look of the kitchen altogether, you might want to consider learning something about what it would take to frame a new wall.
Of course one of the first things that you’ll want to do is get everything together that you’ll need for the job. Many of us are lucky enough today to be able to find two or three home centers plus a local lumberyard within easy driving distance. Price is the first thing that you’ll want to consider when you’re looking for a place to shop.
But that’s not the only consideration. Remember that while the quality of the hardware is basically the same from store to store, the quality of the lumber that will be afforded to you does vary greatly. It’s important here that you find a place that will let you sort through the stacks of what it’s got to offer when you’re selecting pieces.
If you’ve decided to build a new wall at home, the materials that you’ll need are those of basic carpentry: framing lumber for the wall’s structure, some manner of drywall to go over the outside for the skin, and molding to provide that finished look. To put everything together for that finished look, you’ll also need to purchase a variety of fasteners as well as a joint compound to finish the seams in the drywall. You might even want to add a door or two and finally some paint.
Lumber makes up the biggest part of most houses. For that reason, you’ll want to make sure that selecting the right kind is something that you’ll take a bit of time with so that you get it right. Like many other things, when it comes to a remodeling project, knowing how to select the right lumber is a necessary part of the process that will ensure the job gets done right.
In many of the places where you buy your lumber, you’ll notice that there are basically two grades of wood. The grade indicates the quality of the wood and the better of these grades indicates that wood has less defects. Generally, the higher the price, the fewer defects the wood has. Their should also be a grade stamp on the wood that will tell you where the wood came from as well as the grade it received at the mill.
