When you first set out to change your home, you may believe the project is easy. Build a couple of walls here and tear down the wall over there. However, before you start your remodeling project you should always consult an architect. An architect will review the current design of your home to make sure that no structural issues will arise from your remodeling project and create a plan for your proposed changes that incorporates the original architectural style of your home and makes it better.
To get started you need to find an architect that has a design style you like. If you have a friend or relative in your area that recently completed a remodeling project that you like, ask them for the name of the architect they used for the project. Once you have a list of recommended architects in your area, you will want to make an appointment for an interview. It is important that you meet with as many architects as possible. An architect is an artist who creates homes and you need to find the artist who has the same vision for your home as you do.
Besides asking the architect about their payment processes and project management practices, one of the most important questions to ask any possible architect is “what is your design philosophy?” If your own design philosophy and your possible architects philosophy do not mesh, you may be in for quite a disastrous remodeling project. If you prefer classical styling and want to add additional classical elements into your home but your architect’s philosophy is to take classical architecture and add modern architecture elements, the finished project will be nothing you are interested in living in.
A good architect should be able to view pictures of your home as it is now and give you ideas on how to add or remodel your home to meet your desired goals. Pay close attention to the details and hints that any possible architect gives to you and always ask for an explanation when you do not understand something. Architecture is a very technical art and it has a language all its own. If you hear about the batter and the hoodmould and you have no idea what they mean, you need to speak up and ask. If your architect is unable to provide you with answers to your technical questions, seek another architect because the two of you are speaking different languages.
Finding the perfect architect will take a little bit of work on your part, but is well worth the time and energy you will spend. Your home is an investment and if you ruin part of the investment by making the wrong decisions during a remodeling project, you could loose thousands of dollars when you try to sell the home. Do not take the chance that what you do to your home today will end up costing you money in the long term, invest in the services of an architect. The money that you will spend on an architect’s mindful eye during your remodeling project will increase your homes value exponentially.
