In any home, the dining room should be the most elegant and impressive room of all. A fine dining room is a sign of class and status and it is opportunity for the interior designer in all of us to show-off our talents. While a dining room’s layout is relatively simple, it is still important to get an idea of what you want the room to look like before you make any furniture purchases. Also, since there are usually only a couple of pieces of furniture in the dining room, the plan must ensure that the room will hang together when all is in place.
Obviously, the dining room table is the most significant piece of furniture in the room. When choosing a dining room table, one must first consider what the table’s function will be before deciding on design and material options. Will there be large parties at the table? How many people do you want to accommodate at the maximum. A good rule of thumb is twenty-four square feet for every six people. Anything over six diners will require a somewhat longer table. When determining the needs of your dining room, keep in mind that you cannot have a table that is too big for the space, as you want plenty of room on all sides of the table so as not to make your guests feel cramped. Plan to have a full table, even if on most nights, only the immediate family will be at the table.
When purchasing a dining room set, think about how often you will use it. If this will be the regular family table, it might not be wise to buy something overly extravagant, as regular use will quickly damage a fancy table and chair. Even with utmost care, something children and adults alike have not been known to practice on a daily basis, an expensive dining set will deteriorate in value quickly. If, on the other hand, the daily table is in the kitchen or living room, and the dining room is to be saved for special occasions, extravagance is the name of the game. An impressive table and chair set will make or break a fancy dining room, so look at a wide selection before making your purchase. Keep in mind function and space constraints as well as the general look of the room. Depending on these factors, consider both glass and wooden tables as well as both round and square designs.
A cabinet is the usual compliment to a dining set. Even if you do not have any fine china to speak of, a cabinet filled with whatever you have will usually make the space feel less empty.
