Designing a Deck

For homes with a nice backyard, a deck can make the suburbs feel like a lake in the country. For homes with little or no backyard, a patio can provide a nice place to relax on the weekend and after work. In either case, there are some simple general guidelines to remember when planning your deck or patio. If you keep these rules in mind, you can maximize the enjoyment of your deck and patio space.

First of all, space is of utmost concern on any deck or patio. It is important to figure out how many people you expect to accommodate in what will essentially function as an outdoor living room for you and your friends. While most of us will be restricted by the layout of the main structure and constraints placed on a us by yard space, some will have a large backyard and must make a decision about how big the deck or patio should be. It might be your first instinct to assume that bigger is better, sometimes a smaller deck can be more cozy and offer a more intimate setting for outdoor dinner and late night entertainment. Figure out how many guests are most likely to frequent your deck and then figure about two or three square feet per person.

After the deck is built, the accessories are the next options to decide on, that can turn a simply functional deck into a stunning outdoor oasis. First, a theme should be decided upon. It does not help to mix up all sorts of different styles. Like most other projects, less is more when it comes to deck accessories. If it is a wicker look you’re going for, try not to mix up cedar trellis or a pine bench. Also, don’t overcrowd the deck or patio. Keep in mind, the most important aspect of the deck is comfort. Accessories like heaters and bug catchers will enhance the deck experience for everyone.

Outdoor lighting will be especially important in order to get full satisfaction form any patio or deck. Whether you will entertain guests with deck or patio cocktail parties, or will get the most enjoyment out of the deck all alone with a good book, the space must be well lit, but not too well lit. we do not want florescent beams waking up all the neighbors, but we also do not want everyone fumbling around in the dark, Perhaps, apart from the porch light most patios are equipped with, hanging white Christmas lights around the railing or up on top of a trellis would provide the right balance between light and soothing dark.
