Chain Link Fence

First off, when you’re dealing with chain link fencing there’s often no reason to replace a whole course that looks like it might be beyond repair. Quite often there’s a quick repair that will do just as well as a replacement.

To repair the fencing, unwind one damaged strand on each side of the damaged section from the top of the rail to the bottom at the end of the tension wire. To replace the entire length of fencing (if that’s what you’ve decided to do after having a good look) unthread the tension bar at each end of it. You can buy replacements at a fencing supply store.

To replace the entire length of fencing, position one end of the new fencing next to the post and thread the tension bar through it. Then fit the tension bar into each collar, close it and install the bolt. Then tense the fencing. The procedure is similar for fencing at the gate. Thread the tension bar through each end; hook one tension bar onto the clips at the side rail at one end. Then pull the other tension rail the other way and hook it on the clips. This is important to reduce the possibility of damage to the new course of fence that you are installing. Without the proper tension allotted, the chain links are more resilient to damage. Remember too that safety is the number one priority for any job that you take on and fencing is no exception. It’s a good idea to wear the proper safety shoes and glasses no matter where you are if you going to be close to the actual work that’s going on.

You might need to reinforce a post as well. Here’s how you can do that. First of you’ll need to remove the post cap usually by prying it up with a chisel and a hammer. Again, here safety is paramount. Make sure to use something that will protect your hands should either the chisel or the hammer slip from your grasp. Then remove the rail and go to a fencing supply store where you can get a new post. These are generally about two or three feet long. Tap the support post down into the other with a block of wood used as a support and a hammer and remember afterwards to put the rail back.

Creating a maintaining the proper tension is what a good fence is all about. Make sure that you have both of these ingredients so that you’ll be able to enjoy a well made fence for years after it’s made.
