When it comes time to pick out your new bathtub and/or shower, try not to listen to the salesperson just yet. There are many things to consider before you let the salesperson guide you by the hand to his or her next commission.
The basics of what you are looking for are the size and function. Baths and showers come in a large variety of sizes and shapes, so don’t take this task lightly.
For now we will focus on choosing a bath only. Some baths have jets, some are shallow, and some are deep. Test drive bathtubs. Go to the showroom and sit inside the ones you like; get a feel for what is comfortable, what isn’t, decide if you want a whirlpool or not. Don’t be shy- that is why the tubs are on display in the first place!
Bathtubs and showers have different styles. The alcove model is the most common, and is meant to go with a shower in the wall above it. These types of tubs/showers are usually shallow and will have limited styles to choose from. The Home Building Club points out, “When purchasing an alcove tub, be sure to specify if you want the drain to be on the left or right wall, ask about matching shower doors and choose your tub surround (a wall kit). Note: it’s best to go with a waterproof material such as ceramic tile or waterproof paint, if your shower is attached. Depending on your preference, you can have a shower door installed or use a shower curtain.”
Whirlpool tubs have water jets piped into the bottom or sides of the tub. These are great for soaking and relaxing, and provide a nice massage to the user. The electric pump will need maintenance over time, so be prepared for that. The electric pump must have an access door for these repairs so take that into consideration as well. While these tubs will come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes, make sure the one you choose fits in the space you have, and make sure to “test drive” available models, because they don’t always allow adequate room for soaking.
There are many more styles and types of bathtubs, these are just the most common right now. Of course, if you want something more unique, there are a multitude of tubs to choose from, just keep in mind how much work you want to do yourself, how much room you really have and are willing to give up, and how much function you want for your money. Some tubs are just for soaking rather than actual bathing.
