Basement Remodeling: How To

Print

Basement remodeling can be very complex, and if it is not done correctly the end result may not be quite what you pictured and anticipated. Basements come with unique remodeling issues, such as mold and mildew, dampness, walls that may not hold paint, rust, leaking from the foundation, cracks in the walls that seep water, and even dry rot. Because of these problems, remodeling your basement should be planned carefully, and all of these aspects considered.

If you want to remodel the basement of your home, the first step is to decide what to use it for. Do you want a play room for the kids, a home office, or a cozy family room with a fireplace and television? This will help you decide how the finished basement should look and function as. Once you have decided what you are going to put down there, the hard part starts. For your basement to be pleasant, warm, dry, and livable, the first thing you should do is make sure that the basement is completely waterproof. Dampness and moisture are the causes of mildew and mold, including black mold which is known to cause health problems in many individuals. Check to ensure that the walls are not cracked or crumbling, and that the foundation is solid. It may be advisable to have a professional do this to ensure that there are no water or moisture problems when the remodeling is finished. You should also make sure that the gutters and downspouts on the home lead away from the foundation of the house, so no water builds up in this area.

Some basements may have concrete walls, while others have drywall or plywood walls. There are some remodeling systems that can be installed that can remodel your basement in just hours, giving it a whole new look and feel. These systems consist of panels that are mounted on the existing walls, adding a layer of insulation and a whole new feel to the area. They can be costly, but they can also make the process much easier and simple to do for those who choose these systems. Consider all of your available remodeling options, including the price and the time it will take, before making a final decision on whether to do the project or not.

Once you have decided what you want your basement remodeled into, and you are sure that it is waterproof; you will need to plan out the remodeling. This may or may not require blueprints, an architect, and a contractor, depending on the scope of the remodeling. If the remodeling is simply hanging some drywall and painting the walls, you may be able to do it yourself. If you want an extensive renovation done, you should at least consult with a professional. Permits may or may not be required, depending on the extent of the remodeling project, and it is a good idea to check and confirm that everything is done legally.

Heat is another consideration, along with waterproofing, and be aware in the northern areas many basements stay cold all year long. It will not do you any good to spend a fortune if your family will not use the rooms because of the cold. Many homeowners put a second heat source in the basement, such as a wood burning stove or a fireplace. Another option is adding a warming system for the floor. This is a good idea for two reasons, it will heat the area up and keep it warm, and it will also dry out any moisture in the air, keeping the remodeled basement dry. Keeping the basement heated is a way to make the basement cozy and inviting because who does not enjoy sitting in front of a crackling fire on a cold winter day?

There are some tips to remember when remodeling your basement. The first is to minimize the use of draperies and carpets, just in case a flood or water problem does unexpectedly occur. Instead, use a tile or laminate flooring to avoid any moisture retention from fabrics. This will keep mildew and mold away, and prevent your new basement from getting a dank or musty smell. Another tip is to use bright colors and accents, instead of a plain white for the walls. Most basements do not have a lot of windows, and this prevents sunlight from coming in. Use bright colors to liven up the space, and make it more appealing and inviting. It is also a good idea to plan for plenty of lighting, to eliminate any gloom or dark areas. These steps will help you remodel your basement into the living space you’ve dreamed about.
