Although it may not look that way at first, there’s a lot more to a fence than first meets the eye. There are many choices to be made right down to the kinds of fasteners that you will use and the material that will make up the fence. It’s important that every homeowner take the time to get these choices right so that they can build something that they will be able to enjoy for years to come.
One of the first considerations that you will need to hammer out when you’re building a fence is the method you will use to attach any fence-boards that you’ve selected to use. You want to make sure that after all the careful planning is done, the fence will stay sturdy and strong for a long time after. Many of those who have built a fence in the past will tell you that nailing in the boards is one of the easiest and most satisfying parts of the job. Most of the boards that you’ll be working with are anywhere from 1” to 10” thick. The dimensions of these fence-boards and the way that they are applied will give the fence its distinctive character.
The experts have all suggested that there are several creative ways that you can nail these fences together. It’s important that you don’t use too many nails but as a general rule of thumb, fence-boards 4” thick or less will take one nail and those that are over that width generally take two nails. There are different types of designs that can be used and one of the more common is the picket fence where plenty of room is left between the boards.
These are generally used to make the boundary between two properties and they provide only a minimal barrier. Usually just enough to keep the small dogs out or the children in the yard. Board on board fences are generally taller and provide more of a barrier. They can be recognized by the alternating pattern and the fact that they look the same from either side that you look at them from. This design allows for great flexibility and is quite common in that depending on the placement of the boards, the fence can block both the winds and the view.
For someone that wants complete privacy, a panel fence might be the best option. These fences are accomplished by nailing boards over railings and posts. The panel fence provides for the best coverage in the sense that it blocks the view from both sides. These are the best choices for the homeowner that, for whatever reason, wants to ensure their complete privacy.
