Too many of us think that if something goes wrong with a toaster or coffee maker we should just throw it out and go buy a new one, but many of our small appliances are not like disposable lighters. With just a little bit of the right information, they can be repaired or adjusted and work as good as new.
A good example is a drip coffee maker, which is an appliance that many of us have in our homes, so that we might enjoy a cup of coffee before work or as we relax on the weekend mornings. Most of the parts in this type of coffee maker slide out of the housing for easy repairs. However if the coffee maker does not work at all, you should test the terminals of the electric cord and the on/off switch. If either one of these two items shown us that no electricity is flowing, replace them.
If you find that after careful examination, you need to replace the heating element, remove it from the base plate and disconnect the wires from the terminals in the tray then attach a new warning element in the same manner. With a few simple tips you can even learn to repair a toaster.
If a toaster does not heat, check the cord or replace the cord or clean the switch if necessary. If the carriage throws the toast too quickly or rises to slowly, clean the dash pot, which is a kind of counterweight, with alcohol. Once in a while you might even need to recalibrate the light/dark scale so that the toast comes out the way you like it. To do this, move lever to medium and toast a piece of bread. Afterwards, unplug a toaster and turn it over and opened a crumb tray. Turn the calibration knob one way or the other and test the adjustment by toasting another slice of bread until you get the desired darkness.
Remember to move the switch one way if the toast is too light and closer to the edge if the toast was too dark. One of the other small appliances that is very common in today’s kitchen is a food processor and even here, a small repair can make all the difference.
To replace a small reduction gear on the motor shaft, all you need to do is turn the unit over and remove the housing and motor cover. Once you will mobilize the shaft by inserting a screwdriver, you should be able to unscrew the gear with your fingers and screw in the new one afterwards.
