About Architects – Choosing The Right One

Choosing the right architect can seem intimidating to many, and the decision is a very important one. The architect you choose will be the person who designs your project so that you get the look and function you desire. Each architect will have their own unique style and thoughts on design. Do your research before deciding on an architect so that you can choose the one who is right for you and your project. There are some things you can do to choose the perfect architect without being intimidated or feeling over your head. These tips will help walk you through choosing the right architect and being completely satisfied with your choice.

To choose the right architect for your project, first you must have a clear idea of what is included in the project. Think about what you need from the design and construction. Do you want to add more space to your home or building, and if so how many rooms and how much space is needed? Determine the footage needed if possible, as well as what function the rooms will serve. Some rooms may need electricity, plumbing, or both. You should also figure out what the project budget is, and where the money is coming from. An architect can help answer some questions to make the goals clearer if you are not quite sure about some details, such as the exact square footage. After determining the goals and plans for the project, it is time to start looking for the perfect architect.

Start putting together a list of potential architects. Get references and referrals from family, friends, coworkers, the American Institute of Architects, the local phone book, and anywhere else you can find them. Once you have put together a list of potential architects, call each firm listed, and describe what you are looking for. Discuss your project and see if the firm can do the job and whether they are available or not. Ask for their business literature, such as fact sheets, brochures, personnel information, and pictures of past projects. If the firm can not take your project on currently, ask if they can recommend another architect who can. Once you receive the material from all the firms, look it over carefully. Determine whether you like the unique style of each architect. Now it is time to narrow the list down to three or four of the strongest potential architects.

Once you have a much shorter list of potentials, call and arrange an interview with each firm. Do not hire an architect without interviewing a few of them. You will be working closely with them, so there must be a good working relationship between the two of you. Make sure you are comfortable with the architect, and that you do not feel intimidated or pressured. Discuss meeting with the designer who will work on your project, and ask when arranging the interview if there is a fee. Many architects do not charge a fee for the initial consultation, but some do. Ask if the firm can realistically take on your project, especially if it is large or complex. Ask about the design philosophy of the firm, as well as the way the firm will approach your project. Ask about fees and pricing during the interview, and discuss your budget. Before choosing the perfect architect, arrange to see at least one finished project they have done. This will help you tell whether they can design the project the way you want. Ask for references from at least three past clients as well, and check them.

Discussing fees can be very important, because this can be a confusing issue to some. An architect may charge one of several different ways, depending on the project type and specifics. Your project may be billed at an hourly rate, a specific amount per specific unit (as in apartment buildings where they would be paid per apartment or room), a fixed fee amount may be charged, or you may have to pay a certain percentage of the construction costs. In addition, a combination of these types may be used, making it very confusing. Discuss the fee arrangements so that you are clear how you are paying.

After interviewing all the potential architects, it is time to choose one. Compare the fee types and costs, the experience each architect has, how much you like their design style, and the time frame given to complete the project. This will let you choose the right architect, so that your project goes smoothly and you don’t end up deep in debt because the project went over the budget.
