While there are many homeowners who think that working on concrete walls has to be difficult and expensive, that doesn’t need to be the case. There are a few things about the nature of concrete that once learned, will make that job go smoothly and a few techniques that can simplify any project that you might want to take on.
One of the first things that you might want to keep in mind is that concrete is very strong when compressed. However, this does not mean that it will always support weight without cracking. Even though it is a very hard material, it is also quite brittle. When the soil shifts, concrete is in danger of cracking and for this reason it should always be reinforced when it is being used in the construction of a building.
There are times that the reinforcements are added before the forms are done. When these forms are tall, vary narrow, or in difficult places, the reinforcements are done first. There are two basic ways that concrete can be reinforced. The first is to use the standard reinforcement bars. The second method is to use the mesh that look like a large screen made with heavy steel wire. The idea behind either method is that if the concrete cracks for any reason either method of reinforcement will be able to hold the concrete wall up temporarily until other repairs can be made.
Usually the amount and type of reinforcement is determined by the type of soil and the geographic location. Regardless of the type of reinforcement that you use, make sure that it is spaced and tied. Remember too, that there should be at least three inches of concrete around each course of the reinforcement. Of course, before you can reinforce the concrete, you’ll need to find out how much you need to order.
Then, once the order has been placed and delivered, the wall should be poured. The truck itself should be backed as close as possible to the forms that you are about to pour. Then it should be poured into the forms, tamped, and then spread evenly. This is all done to avoid honeycombs and air pockets forming in the drying concrete.
After all these other steps have been done, the next thing to do is to level off the top of the concrete wall. A concrete or grout with a fine mixture of sand may be used to finish off the top section of the wall. As well, it’s important to embed anchors in the concrete before it hardens. Once these are embedded firmly, the concrete around them is troweled smooth so that the finished product has a professional look.
