The
Ins and Outs Behind Insurance
While having
current homeowner’s insurance is a necessary part of protecting yourself
from all kinds of property damage, generally the basic form of this
insurance does not cover the damage incurred from natural disasters like
floods or earthquakes. It’s best to look at the kinds of natural
disasters that are common in the area that you live in and then try to
get the corresponding insurance.
In addition
to the basic coverage that handles things like furnishings, you should
also be open to getting the proper coverage so that things like fine
jewelry and art can be replaced if only monetarily. Riders that can
increase this coverage can also increase the premiums that you pay, but
you will also be more adequately compensated for loss. It’s a good idea
to keep the receipts for any expensive items that you purchase and have
any collections that you own appraised.
You can save
some money on insurance premiums if you go to the trouble of making your
home more disaster resistant and secure. There are several things that
you can add that will reduce premiums and these include storm shutters,
sprinkler alarms, smoke detectors ( and in many places these are a law)
and burglar alarms. As well, by shopping your insurance needs around
and/or staying with the same company over time, you can save money.
If all the
contents of your home were lost in a natural disaster you might be
called upon to itemize and supply proof for every thing that you claim.
In the aftermath of such an emergency, all of these items might be even
hard to list. To make sure that you are compensated for every item, you
should make a list and then take photographs of each item. As well, it’s
a good idea to make a checklist of all your household possessions.
Included here
should be the name, make and model of every appliance and all the
electronic gear. Keep this list in a safe place and remember that it
could be the only thing that proves to an insurance company what you
had. There are things that you might not think of at first that are
nevertheless very important and one of them is to take pictures of even
the articles that might not seem that important at first. For example,
open all your closet doors and take pictures of everything inside since
a wardrobe can add up to thousands of dollars in lost money.
Here’s a
final hint that can really get you out of a jamb. If you take all the
pictures on a digital camera, then it’s possible to store those pictures
in a file and then store the file in a place like a website where those
pictures will always be kept safe even if the computer and camera are
destroyed.
