Heat and Air Conditioning / HVAC

Common Types of Heating Systems
The most common type of heating appliance is a furnace, usually fueled by natural gas, oil or another combustible fuel. The combustion of the fuel is the heat source, but more important than the fuel, is the means by which the heat is distributed throughout the house, most often a forced air distribution system. These types of systems are associated with floor, wall and ceiling vents that deliver the heat from the appliance to the different rooms in the house...continue reading

Solar Roof Tiles
Individual roof tiles may be removed without damaging the shingles underneath. They also provide an additional layer of protection and insulation to the roof. Solar roof tiles protect the roof from damaging UV rays, and weather exposure, which can aid in extending the life of the roof for additional 25 to 30 years. The insulating effect saves you money associated with heating and cooling costs...continue reading

Asbestos Pipe Insulation
The usual suspects are your pipes, but can also include ductwork insulation, walls and ceilings, roofing and siding, artificial logs, floor tiles, linoleum, insulation, and wire coating. First check the label and the manufacturing date. If it was made before 1980 and is not labeled as asbestos-free, it's guilty until proven innocent. Remember, pipes are priority one. As the asbestos in them deteriorates it will blow into living areas...continue reading

Windows and Heat Loss
The windows that are found in the newer homes that are built by conscientious builders are often made with double glass. This is considered to be the prime method of reducing heat loss through windows. Be warned here, that if you want to reduce the heat loss that you experience by putting in these dual windows, there is generally no other way to do that than to replace the whole window. If you're not ready to take that step, which is often expensive, there are several things that you...continue reading

Efficiently Insulated Homes Save Money on Heating and Air Conditioning
Many old heating systems such as furnaces and boilers require air in-flow. In older homes, this air was provided by air leakage through door, window frames and chimneys. In modern living spaces, the air in flow and out flow is carefully controlled through designed in and egress hatches and ducts. Because uncontrolled air flow is undesirable when it comes to modern heating systems, it is prudent to seal all air leaks with weather stripping or caulk. Air leaks most often occur...continue reading

Types of Air Conditioning Systems
A heat pump uses the outside air as the energy source for cooling the internal spaces of the house. Often, an air conditioning system consists merely of a window mounted air conditioning unit to cool a single room or space. This can be an effective method for a single room in your house, such as kitchen or a bedroom or even good for an apartment or a condominium. One significant disadvantage is the need to cover or remove the window unit in the winter time to avoid serious heat loss...continue reading

Some Hot Water Ideas
The sun can provide up to 50% of the annual hot water needs that the average home will need. Still the experts caution that it is not worth the cost of the electricity produced by solar cells to heat an immersion. They say that the direct heat of the sun is better used to heat the water via a direct solar water heater. This type of solar water heater consists of the common solar collectors that are essentially absorbent black collecting plates that are in constant contact with a series of copper pipes...continue reading

Does Your Home Improvement Require A Building Permit
You will need a permit to add on a room, demolish a room or structure on your property that is more than 200 square feet, build a stairway, remove or move a wall, build a new wall, and building a fence that is higher than 6 feet tall. You can paint, install insulation, install storm windows, put up shelving or cabinets, replace wall coverings (such as wallboard), and pave a walkway until your heart's content without getting a permit...continue reading

Fireplace Issues
The air that a fire consumes needs to come from somewhere.  It comes in through cracks and seams in the home and through the chimney.  So, while your fireplace is roaring, the fire is actually pulling in large amounts of cold air.  This cold air goes straight to the fire and actually helps to make the room colder.  Therefore, while you are warmed by the radiate heat from the fire, the rest of your house is getting colder.  This becomes an especially important issue when you need...continue reading

Heating and Cooling Concerns
There are many different kinds of heating units.  Each has a different set of potential problems, and this is because each of them operates in a different way.  For example, a forced air system has a central furnace that uses oil or gas to keep air which is then forced through ducts by a fan until it is blown into various rooms in the house.  This system works very well because you can heat various rooms in any house quickly.  The disadvantage is in the fact that dust particles as well as the heat are being...continue reading

All You Need to Know about Heating and Air Conditioning
Still, the principles that apply to the office work for the home as well, and one of the best ways to make any house more eco-friendly and less expensive to operate is to upgrade the heating system. Remember that in some northern parts of the United States and Canada, heating accounts for two thirds of the utility bill. Heating systems in the United States, in both private and industrial concerns, account for over one billion tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere annually as well...continue reading

Geothermal HVAC
Piping can either run horizontally along a large property, twisting back and forth to cover a large amount of ground, or vertically where space is more limited. Such a system is extremely effective for providing a steady heat that doesn't dry out the air in your home, like a standard gas furnace would, and with a monthly bill far less than either electric or gas. To install a geothermal HVAC system in an existing home can be quite the investment, ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars, but for a new home being built, a geothermal system often...continue reading

How A Thermostat Relates To Air Quality
A home thermostat is a temperature sensitive switch that controls the furnace or air conditioner. Some of the models that you can get include a thermostat, clock and timer. Energy Efficient HVAC Systems

With the economic crisis that we are facing today, everyone wants to ensure that they are saving money whenever and wherever they can, this includes your heating, ventilating and air conditioning system. The problem is that most HVAC systems out there are as old as twenty years, so it is certainly not using energy in the most efficient way and it is therefore coming out of your pocket.

So how can you find out whether your HVAC system is costing you money or whether it is as efficient as it could be? Ask yourself a few of these questions and see how you do:

Does your home have excess humidity or lots of dust? If it does, chances are you have equipment that is not operating properly or the ductwork has developed a leak.

If your air conditioner is very noisy there may be a problem with the coil of your cooling equipment or it could be the wrong size for your home.

Are some of your rooms too hot while others are too cold? If so, there could be problems with your insulation or your ducts are not properly sealed thereby causing erratic heating or cooling in different areas.

Is your heat pump or air conditioner more than twelve years old? If so, it is more than likely an energy drainer without the efficiencies of today's models.

Is your furnace or boiler more than fifteen years old? Again, older models do not have any energy saving features and therefore are inefficient to run.

Do you need frequent repairs or have you changed your air filter regularly? Spending money on bad or inefficient equipment tends to be a vicious cycle that you will not win. Also, if your air filters are not changed regularly, at least once a year and depending on usage more often and in some cases monthly.

With home heating and cooling accounting for approximately half of a family's energy bills each year, it is especially important that you are using equipment that is as energy efficient as possible.  If your home is not heating or cooling adequately or you are spending money on repairs for equipment that is over 12-15 years old, you are wasting your money. Newer more efficient equipment can save as much as 20% per year on your energy costs so it is well worthwhile to make the investment in products that will provide these improvements and make our environment cleaner.

Regular maintenance will prevent some of the problems with your HVAC system as dirt and negligence contribute to their not giving you their optimal output and can often lead to damage to your equipment. Here are some things that you can do to determine what shape your HVAC equipment is in. You might be comfortable doing these maintenance checks yourself or you might consider having a contractor or other professional do it for you or explain how to do it.

Check your air filter at least every six months and many professionals advise monthly. Sometimes they can be cleaned without replacement. These filters are usually found in the duct system of your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump.

If you have an air conditioner you should check the condensation drain to ensure that it is not clogged. If it is plugged up it can lead to higher humidity levels in the house or cause water damage and could even breed mold and/or other bacteria.

Check your thermostat to ensure that it is programmed correctly and that the heater or air conditioner turns on and turns off when it should. If you keep your thermostat at one setting with no program you are losing a vital opportunity to conserve energy.

All electrical connections should be monitored to ensure that they are tightly connected and operating properly as loose wires or connections can lead to damage or safety hazards.

Besides regular maintenance checks, you should bring your home up to date and as energy efficient as possible by ensuring your ductwork is properly sealed so that there is no leakage of air. There is diagnostic equipment that can be used to check for this. Where there are improperly sized ducts or damaged ones, you should have them replaced and/or repaired. As ducts can be found in places that are generally hidden from view, they are more likely to be forgotten and can be causing leakage in many areas that you might not have considered. Because duct tape does not last you should use metal or mastic tape or an aerosol based sealant to seal your ducts and then test them afterward. Insulating attics or crawl spaces will provide more efficiency as well.

If you decide to replace your equipment you should ensure that you get ENERGY STAR qualified products that are available in furnaces, boilers, air conditioners and heat pumps. Equipment with this rating has passed testing that measures its energy efficiency. They are the most advanced technologically in use today and provide energy and cost savings to the homeowner. These new boilers have no pilot light as they have an electronic ignition and they provide more heat with the same amount of fuel.

Other reliable equipment are Geothermal Heat Pumps or GHPs that utilize underground temperatures that are more stable to heat or cool your home. Besides being more energy efficient they are quieter and can also have the ability to heat water. Though more expensive initially, in the long run they will significantly lower your energy bills. Many new homes are installing these.

Programmable thermostats will increase your energy savings if you keep the thermostat at lower temperatures during periods of time when no one is home or during the night when people are sleeping. These thermostats should be installed on an interior wall that is away from any appliances, windows, doors or skylights. It should not be near the heating or cooling registers or other drafty areas so that it provides the best energy efficiency. If you override the programmed settings, you will use more energy and defeat your purpose; to be energy efficient!
