Getting The Leg Up on Storage

It's a well-known fact that everyone feels better when everything is organized and in its place.  A haphazard mess makes us feel cluttered and a little depressed ourselves, but a neat orderly environment is good for our mind and soul.  To that end, a great many innovative storage ideas have come up recently, and these are great ways to make us feel like we are in control and focused in our daily lives.  But like any other way to get organized, you need a plan. There are several things that the conscientious homeowner can look at to get some preliminary ideas.

First off, you might want to look at investing in built-in storage ideas.  Many of these are well worth the money and since you will save on floor space, the best idea here is to put these storage ideas up against a wall.  This built-in storage idea does not just apply to the bedroom as you might expect, though that is a great place to start. The hallway or den are other great places to invest in built-in storage and even in the bathroom you can use some innovative ideas to hide all kinds of things.

Remember to look at those spaces that you might not always consider as well. Start looking in the basement and at closets, looking for those overlooked storage ideas. Then work your way into scouting under the stairs and even behind furniture.  An innovative mind will surprise you with the interesting spaces that it can come up with. You’ll want to take a second look at all your hanging solutions as well. Many stores deal with the solutions to your storage problems exclusively, and these places have an assortment of books and hangers and all sorts of interesting finishes. It's a good idea to rethink all the spaces in places like your closets and decide where an extra hook or two would allow you to store things more easily and efficiently.

One of the other suggestions about how you can increase your storage space is simple and once you hear it you may wonder how you overlooked it in the first place. You need to remember here that storing things is most efficient when it is done vertically. For that reason you might want to take a look at your existing cabinets and see if it's possible to build on top of them.  There's quite often some room available on the tops of fridges or even bookshelves and you can even remove parts of the existing structures to make room for new storage spaces.

The last suggestion is that you label everything that you store so that you’ll be able to find the things more easily in the future with a minimum amount of fuss and bother. It's good to keep in mind that storage requires a little innovation and imagination.
