Asphalt Roofing Shingles –
The Intelligent New York Option from your
roofing contractor Brooklyn and Queens

Most people who need to replace a roof do so with asphalt shingles. With approximately eighty per cent of new roofs being made of asphalt, it seems to be the most intelligent option. But why is that so? The first and foremost reason is that they are an economical option that offers a variety of styles, qualities and costs so that they are versatile as well as reasonably inexpensive. They are also easy to install and readily available in sizes, colors and styles that will suit most homes that have a pitched roof from four to twelve feet.

Asphalt shingles come in two varieties – one is made with a fiberglass reinforcing mat and the other is made of an organic cellulose fiber mat that is created from wood. The fiberglass asphalt shingle has a reinforcing mat made of cellulose fibers like
recycled waste paper or wood fibers that requires only a hard asphalt coating while the organic mat is saturated with soft asphalt and then coated with weather resistant mineral granules. The fiberglass asphalt shingles have a better fire rating and are much thinner than organic ones making them lighter and much easier to transport. Organic shingles however are more flexible and tougher in cold weather extremes making them popular in the Northern states and in Canada where colder weather prevails. Fiberglass shingles are more popular in the southern and central states where the weather is generally warmer.

Asphalt shingles are offered in a variety of colors, patterns and styles making them popular for that reason alone. The old style 3-tab shingle required that the tabs be perfectly aligned or you would produce a wavy uneven appearance that could be distracting as well as unattractive. With the new architectural shingles that are available in random patterns that resemble slate, wood or ceramic tile, you don’t have to worry about this as the
architectural shingles already have the appearance you want so the new shingle will enhance any home’s décor and fit into the style you are looking for.

Asphalt shingles offer the benefits of an easy installation as well as an affordable product. Considered among the easiest to install, the asphalt shingle can withstand extreme temperatures where winter weather includes rain, wind, snow and ice for long periods of time. With a variety of shingles that can be found with Class A, B or C classifications which are fire and flammability standards that are nationally recognized. The asphalt shingle with a Class A rating should be used where there is a high fire probability. Some asphalt shingles can also be bought featuring wind resistance that has been tested by the manufacturer and should be used in areas subject to high winds.

There a four
different types of asphalt shingles that are used for roofing – strip shingles, laminated shingles, interlocking shingles and large format shingles. The most common is the strip shingle which is usually referred to as the three-tab shingle that is available in standard or metric dimensions. This type of shingle can provide textural shadowing to provide
a specific design depending on how they are laid out, however if done incorrectly they can cause distortion. The laminated shingles are three dimensional architectural shingles that can provide a visual effect that has a customized look and is considered the most aesthetically pleasing of all the shingles. Interlocking shingles are woven together by fastening to each other to provide better wind resistance and are available in a number of patterns, sizes and shapes to give you lots of design options. Large format shingles are hexagonal or rectangular in shape and do not use tabs or cutouts.

Generally lasting between fifteen to twenty years on average with some heavier organic asphalt shingles lasting up to thirty years, an
asphalt shingle roof manufacturer will almost always give a warranty. Asphalt roofing generally requires little regular maintenance and will last for years without any repairs for low slope or steep sloping roofs. Some manufacturers of asphalt shingles also offer algae resistant products to protect your roof from contaminates of this nature.

As with anything that you purchase, if you follow some basic maintenance rules you should not encounter any problems, so you should routinely follow an inspection regimen that will ensure you detect a problem before it gets out of hand. You should regularly do a visual inspection of your roof at a minimum of once a year to see if there are any missing, loose or damaged shingles. This inspection should include a check of any chimneys, skylights or flashings to see if there is anything amiss. You should look for signs of bird or insect nests in louvers, chimneys or vents and look for any telltale signs of moisture that could mean a possible leak in the soffit or fascia boards to see if there is any deterioration. Any trees that grow close to a house should be trimmed back so that no limbs or leaves are leaning or growing onto the roof. If you
have a steep roof you should look around window dormers or turrets or any other structures on the roofline.

If you have a flat roof you should see if there are any signs of blistering or
cracking of the shingles or torn or uplifting shingles. Asphalt rolled roofing is also offered and is made of the same materials as asphalt shingles with rolls being offered in sheets of eighteen or thirty-six inches wide. This type of asphalt roofing is generally used on a flat roof but can be subject to warping or buckling if not properly installed. Once this occurs then the surface granular coating can wear down fairly quickly. Periodic inspections should be done to look for deterioration, tearing or cracking and you should ensure that all overlaps or edges are well sealed.

Choosing the right person for a proper installation of your asphalt shingles will ensure that you have no headaches later on.  This professional will remove all the old shingles and ensure that the roofing plywood is in good condition with no deterioration and that it is nailed down in all places. If there are damaged boards those should be replaced and nails added if necessary so that the wood is securely in place. If you are planning to do this job yourself, you need to ensure you have the proper materials essential before getting started including: roofing shovel or square ended spade, knee pads, roofing felt, roofing nails, and a ladder with a rope to use as a safety tether. Other tools needed are a utility knife that will be needed to modify or cut the shingles to fit.

Prior to starting, you should ensure that windows are covered for protection and that any plants or other obstacles are removed from the area close to the house so that they won’t be damaged when the old shingles are pulled off. You should always check with your local building codes to ensure that you are complying with all codes such as fire resistant roofing for fire prone areas. You might need to secure a permit for the replacement of the roof.  Working on a roof can be hazardous and it is important to secure the ladder at the top as well as the bottom and if at all possible have a helper who can assist. Carrying supplies of shingles, nails and other materials required is heavy work and can be difficult particularly if you do not have assistance.

Proper installation is the key to ensuring minimal repairs or damage to your roof from uplift, wind tear or moisture damage.  If you plan to do the project yourself, it is important to get as much information as possible
about the proper way to install these shingles. If your asphalt shingles are improperly installed or the wrong flashing is used around chimneys or skylights you can create a problem later on. If gutters are not properly installed they can also cause water to flow incorrectly underneath the shingles causing water damage that might otherwise have been avoided. If your chimney cap has cracked or otherwise become damaged, this could cause a leak in your roof too.

If you get a
professional roofer who is knowledgeable about asphalt roofing you will minimize your risks of any problems arising in the future. With many things to consider, sometimes it is safer to spend a little extra money now to be certain that the asphalt shingle roofing is installed correctly so that you don’t have to deal with a leak that could have been avoided. Whatever your decision, you can be assured that putting a new asphalt shingle roof on your home will increase its value and give your home a beautiful façade that will make your family and your neighbors satisfied for many years to come. Don’t waste any more time – make the intelligent choice of choosing a new asphalt shingle roof – you will be happy with your investment and pleased with the results.

Modern Slate Roofing Without the
Weight and Cost of Slate - for Queens
and Staten Island Homes

Slate roofs have a charm and elegance that is appealing to everyone and is often associated with historic buildings or structures built to last a long time such as a courthouse or other government buildings. Historically slate has been used for roofs since the settlement of America by the early colonists and continued to gain popularity especially after the Civil War when quarries opened up and the railroad made transport easier. Slate roofs are known for their durability and low maintenance as well as their aesthetics and was a popular choice for many years particularly in regions where slate was a natural resource and was quarried near the sites of the structures being built.

Today however the cost is prohibitive for most buyers as
slate roofing tiles continue to be manufactured by hand through a tried and true method that has developed over centuries.  The process of preparing roofing tiles goes through five steps:

  • Cutting – Large blocks of slate are cut across the grain into sections that are slightly wider than the finished roofing tile.

  • Sculpting – With a chisel and a mallet each section is sculpted to the desired shape.

  • Splitting – Each block is split to the thickness required by slicing along the cleavage planes.

  • Trimming – This step requires trimming any excess to finalize the designed size and shape.

  • Hole Punching – Two nail holes are made along the top of the slate with placement determined by the size of the slate and how much exposure it will have.

With this tedious process that is time consuming and labor intensive, slate roofs were nevertheless the preferred roofing method and could be done in three different types: standard, textural or graduated styling. The most popular was the standard slate roof which was a consistent pattern with the same sized slate tiles that came in three different sizes. Standard slates could also be used though to create designs such as geometric patterns or a floral design. A textural slate roof is usually associated with a Tudor style structure where different colors of slate tiles were used as well as different thicknesses providing a variety of patterns and designs. Graduated slate tile roofs provided a bigger size and thickness at the eave and then gradually decreased to the smallest and thinnest slate being at the ridge of the roof. This style was generally used on institutional buildings but is also found on historic homes as well.

Although long lasting with a lifespan of up to 125 years or even more, slate roofs are expensive to repair or replace and increasingly people are turning to alternative roofing that resembles slate in looks and its durability but is economically superior. A synthetic slate that is made of recycled rubber and plastic polymers is becoming the answer for most buyers who want the aesthetics of slate without the prohibitive costs. At roughly one third of the cost of real slate, in today’s market this is a huge plus.

This environmentally friendly injection molded slate gives you the look and feel of slate but is also considerably lighter making it an even better roofing choice.  With a weight of a little over one pound at 1.25 pounds each, these synthetic slate tiles put less of a burden on a structure and still have the durability of real slate with a life span of up to one hundred years. This makes them easier to handle and to transport or unload and ensures that your structure will not need any additional reinforcement to hold the weight, unlike real slates tiles. With the ability to withstand high winds or the force of hail and other types of weather, it has a resistance to freezing and thawing to ensure there is no leakage.  Considered energy efficient and with their recycled materials, some states offer incentives for this type of roofing and the rubberized tile offers low maintenance as well. These modern slate tiles have a Class A fire rating making them safer to offer protection from fire for your home or other structure. Each tile is shaped exactly like a real slate tile and available in the same ten or twelve inch sized tiles or can be customized to fit your needs. There is no longer the worry of breakage when a tile has to be sized to fit as it can easily be modified with a utility knife.

Available in a variety of colors – black, brown, dark green, gray, light green or red – these modern rubberized slate roofing tiles can be used on any type of roof whether flat or steep and complex with turrets. For most roofs you would use the single rubber slate tiles that are individually applied in patterns or designs as desired.  You can create any design you want in the colors that will enhance the décor of your home and individualize it as you wish. You can use mix and match colors and designs that will be uniquely yours and increase the value and aesthetics of your home and neighborhood. If you have a
flat roof, you might want to consider a rubberized slate that comes in a sheet that is sold by the square which typically covers approximately one hundred square feet. You can even have them custom sized to exactly fit your roof although this will be more expensive. The beauty of a flat rubber slate roof is that there is virtually no seam, which in turn, diminishes the chance of a leak. Flat roofs have a tendency to lack good drainage systems so having just two or three squares of rubberized slate will be ideal with minimal seams and their tendency to deter leakage.

If you are
re-roofing with rubber slate tiles, it is important to strip your old roof down to its plywood base to ensure that you don’t have any problems later on. Using standard roofing nails rather than specialized ones required for real slates, the rubberized slate tile can be attached using a pneumatic nail gun as you don’t need to worry about breaking a tile in the process. Due to their longevity it is important to use top grade materials with the rubberized slate tiles so that these materials last as well. It is important to use heavy gauge copper or aluminum or lead-coated copper for the flashing and a thirty pound felt underneath as well as a bituminous membrane along the edges. Higher quality materials means higher costs, but you are saving a lot by not using real slate while still getting the aesthetic value of it.

Once you have your new rubber slate tile roof it is important to maintain it and maximize its lifetime expectancy. With its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, you will enjoy a warmer home in the winter and cooler home in the summer. Liquid rubber or specialized tapes can also be used to make small repairs so that they don’t expand and become larger over time.

The best solution to ensure low maintenance is a liquid sealer that is available and can be applied to your entire roof top which will in turn provide protection and minimize the amount of repair ever required.  With a variety of rubber roofing product manufacturers available that offer many styles and types of materials available, it is important to take your time to do adequate research and check out references of the product you determine to be the best choice for you. As with anything, you want to ensure that you have a quality vendor that will be there if you have any problems whatsoever and that stands behind their product. A good product also requires an installation by a professional who knows and understands rubber slate tiles and has experience in their installation and maintenance.

What are you waiting for? Start looking at tile sizes, colors and styles that will improve the appearance of your home and provide a lower cost durable choice that will last throughout your lifetime. While you are
planning the rubber slate roofing for your home, you should also consider that this type of stylish roofing will be ideal for a separate garage, storage facility or even for your dog house in the back yard. After all, the whole purpose is to get a quality look with a roofing material that is durable and will last a long time – but most importantly a roofing material that is economical and environmentally friendly and fits your budget. Creating a unified look for your home and outbuildings will give you satisfaction and be appealing to your family, friends and neighbors.

Affordable Roofing Options in Brooklyn NY
from your roofing contractor in Brooklyn,
Manhattan and Queens New York

When it comes time to replace your roof there are many options that are available, so it can be confusing figuring out which choice is the best for you. The first instinct is to replace it with the same type of roof that is already there but sometimes that can be rather expensive and might not be the best solution for you. Before making your decision you should consider the pros and cons of each including the costs and the lifespan of each as well as how much maintenance is required.

Other considerations should be the age of the home and how long you plan to live there and whether the roofing cost is justified. The style of your home makes a difference as well since some roofing types would not “fit in” with the architecture of your home so that could narrow down the search right there. There are many
types of roofing, including asphalt shingles otherwise known as composition roofs, wood or shakes shingles, metal roofing, tile, concrete, rubber or plastic engineered and eco roofs. Let’s look at them all and see which options are the most affordable.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Local  price quote for your new roofing and gutters project
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Asphalt shingles or composition – This style can be used on most types of architecture – from modern contemporary to historic. It comes in many styles, colors and types and is fire resistant as well as easy to repair and best of all – it is inexpensive with options available that have more durability for extra costs. Its lifespan is between 15 to 30 years but it is considered environmentally unfriendly and is subject to moss and mildew.

  • Wood shingles or shakes – This style is used on a wide range of architectures that include ranch, contemporary or bungalows and cottages and historic homes. It easily blends with the environment with a natural weathering and is easy to replace or repair shingles. It adds some insulation and will last from 30 to 50 years if well maintained. It is harder to install requiring a professional and gets a poor fire rating unless it is pressure treated. Besides being expensive it also will rot or split easily and tends to have mold and mildew.

  • Metal made of aluminum, copper, steel or tin – This style is often seen on many types that include ranch, bungalows or cottages, contemporary and historic. With a variety of colors and looks that resemble slate, cedar or shingles, this style is very durable lasting fifty years or more and is very low maintenance withstanding hard rain, hail or high winds easily. It is considered environmentally friendly and can be installed over an existing roof – however installation can be difficult and should be done by a professional. It may be expensive and need some painting but it has a very long lifespan.

  • Tile made of concrete or clay – This style is often seen in sunny climates on Mediterranean, Spanish, Italian, French, Mission, Beaux Arts or contemporary or ranch style homes. With a variety of colors and styles these roofs are fireproof and easy to maintain and very durable lasting a long time. These are very heavy and expensive with installation more difficult and repairs harder because of the fragility of the tiles if they are walked on.

  • Slate – This style can be found on French, Italian, Beaux Arts and larger mansions or chateaux. They are fireproof and known for their beauty and their long lifespan but they need professional installation because of their difficulty to install. Besides being very heavy they are also very expensive. With high maintenance and because of their fragility, they are usually found on high end homes.

  • Concrete or fiber reinforced – This style is found on any types of architectures. It comes in many colors and varieties including those that resemble stone, tile or shakes.  This type is very durable and is fire resistant meeting most of the more restrictive fire codes. They are lightweight and insect resistant and very low maintenance. Some products however do not live up to the quality standards that others have and they can be expensive.

  • Hot mopped asphalt with decorative stone – This is primarily used on flat roofed style homes that are contemporary or modern and usually found in California or other sunny climates. They are inexpensive and easy to repair but they present a major health risk when they are being installed. Their fumes increase the smog and have a strong smell that is unpleasant.

  • Engineered rubber or plastic – This style is found on any architecture and is only one third of the weight of slate with a wide range of colors and styles to choose from. Made of recycled materials, these roofs are attractive as well as economical and they are supposed to last from thirty to fifty years, however, they are new to the marketplace so long-range effects might not be known.

  • Eco roofs – This style is used on gently sloping roofs and is considered environmentally friendly with a roofing system of vegetation and soil that filters rainwater. It provides insulation while keeping homes cooler in the summer. They are considered low maintenance and have an extensive lifespan. While generally unknown in the United States they have been used in Europe for more than thirty years and can be expensive to install.

Once you weigh the pluses and minuses of each type of roof you need to determine which one makes the most sense for you. Obviously the composition asphalt shingles are the least expensive and a have moderately long lifespan of fifteen to thirty years but they are not the best environmentally and could cause problems with mold. Metal roofing is long lasting and can be expensive but there are a variety of choices that might make it more affordable over the long-term as it is very durable and it is environmentally friendly.  The good news is that there are lots of choices and sometimes paying more for a product in the beginning will serve you well over the long haul – you just need to do the math and decide for yourself.

The Right Gutter System Can Save Every Brooklyn, NY Homeowner Big Bucks

One of the most important money-saving items a homeowner can add to their home is a rain gutter system.  Thousands of dollars can be saved by diverting rainwater away from your foundation and landscaping.  The benefits far outweigh the initial cost.

Let’s take a look at what can happen when a house is not equipped with
gutters:

1) Foundation problems – water pooling alongside the foundation can cause expansion and contraction of the soil which then can cause cracks in your homes foundation.  Cracks can let water into the basement or crawl space, which can lead to more erosion and costly repairs, along with the growth of mold and mildew.  Patio slabs and concrete sidewalks can suffer the same fate as your foundation. By diverting water away from your foundation and slabs with gutters and downspouts, soil is kept at a consistent moisture level, thus preventing the associated expansion and contraction.

2) Staining - masonry and siding can be stained by dirt and minerals splashing onto them, which can be impossible to get rid of completely.

3) Wood rot – this can affect your house, wooden steps, deck, windows, and house and garage doors.  Frequent contact with water will break down the stain, paint and allow water to infiltrate these surfaces.

4) Landscape damage – water running off of your roof can cause soil erosion and damage to shrubs and flowers, and wash away mulch.  Excessive moisture build-up could also permit harmful fungus to develop as well as attract ants, roaches and termites.

The benefits of gutters are many.  When installed properly and maintained, they prevent all of the issues listed above, potentially saving you much of your hard-earned money.  They add value to your home, and can either blend in with the house color, or serve as an accent.  By diverting rainwater to a container such as a barrel, the collected water could irrigate your garden or flower bed, bringing savings to your water bills.

Things to consider when selecting gutters are price, looks, and how they need to perform depending on the area in which you live.  There are two types of gutters most often used, sectional and seamless.

Sectional rain gutters tend to eventually leak at the seams, but are the least-expensive option initially.  They can also be installed without a professional, saving you money by doing it yourself.  Two types of materials are used, either vinyl, which generally runs $3 to $5 a linear foot, or aluminum, which usually comes in at $4 to $8 a linear foot.  Vinyl is the most popular and has a lot of benefits--it’s easy to install, maintains its color and flexibility, is dent resistant and doesn’t rust or corrode.  It is susceptible, however, to brittleness with age and extreme cold.  Aluminum is more prone to denting but it’s very adaptable and is the material used most often in seamless gutter systems.  Like vinyl, its color wears well. Aluminum comes in different thicknesses, so be sure to do some research and get the thickness you’ll need to withstand the weight of ladders and falling tree branches, etc.

Seamless gutters must be installed by a professional, and the initial cost will be greater than sectional gutters.  Seamless gutters will not leak, which may be worth the extra cost to you.  Aluminum, galvanized steel and copper are used and typically run $20 per linear foot for the aluminum and steel, while copper runs about $15 per linear foot and requires a more experienced installer, but does not rust and can be very pleasing aesthetically.  For those of you with homes several stories high with hard-to-reach areas, seamless is the way to go since they don’t require the maintenance for leaks that sectional gutters will almost certainly need.

Most gutters come in several sizes and shapes called profiles.  There are U shapes, and K configurations, where the front looks like the letter K.  Gutter channels are available in 4, 5, or 6 inch diameters.  Downspouts vary in size and shape.  For areas with lots of leaves, select a larger downspout to minimize clogs.

Proper maintenance is a must after
adding gutters to your home.  To prevent clogging and back-ups, gutters need to either be equipped with a cover to keep out leaves and debris, or they must be cleaned out regularly.  Fall is a good time to do this, before the cold weather moves in and the snow falls.  Another good reason to keep gutters clean is that a build-up of soggy leaves and other material is the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, as well as mosquitoes and other pests.

Installing a rain gutter system on your house, your pride and joy, could be one of the most important things you do to protect its integrity and value.  Adding gutters will most assuredly save you money in the long run, by preventing costly damage to your landscaping, concrete slabs, or worse, the very foundation on which your house sits.

Types Of Gutter Systems For Your
Roof Drainage in Manhattan & Brooklyn, NY

If you are considering replacing or repairing your gutter systems for better roof drainage, there are many different options and choices you will have to consider. Rain gutters come in two basic types, seamless and sectional. Seamless gutters do not clog as easily, because debris and fallen leaves are diverted to the ground instead of through the gutter system, while water is diverted and flows through the gutter system. Seamless gutters are the most popular gutter system around, because it has the best appearance with no seams, it is very durable, and maintenance is simple. The second type of gutter system is a sectional system. These systems are favored by homeowners who want to install the gutters themselves. Sectional gutter systems have a wide variety of configurations that can be created, making them easy to put together and install. Sectional gutters are usually made from aluminum or vinyl. This type of gutter system has some drawbacks, and one of these is that this type of system has a higher risk of leaks, because of the joints where the sections meet.

Integral gutters are another type of system that is not used very often any more, but these gutter systems were very popular on homes built during the nineteen sixties. Integral gutters use the fascia and rafter ends of the home to form the roof drainage. This type of system is prone to leaks that can affect the
roof and structure of the home, and can be replaced with a more modern gutter system when you have a new roof installed. If you choose to keep an existing integral gutter system, make sure that you have an inspection done at least every three years to ensure it stays in good repair.

Gutters are necessary for the roof of your home to drain properly. This prevents water buildup on the roof that can cause your roof to leak and become weak or damaged. Gutters are available in many different materials. They can be found in wood, aluminum, vinyl, plastic, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, and others. Wood gutters are not very common, but they can still be present in older homes when restoration is done to put the home back in the original condition for the time period the home was built in. At one time wooden gutters were considered the norm, but newer metals and other materials have made wood gutters almost obsolete. Wood gutters can be prohibitively expensive, and may cost from twelve to twenty dollars per linear foot.

Aluminum is one of the most popular gutter system materials around today, and aluminum gutters hold much more water than wood gutters will. Aluminum is a lightweight metal, but it does damage easily. A ladder which is heavy can cause damage if it is set up against aluminum gutters, so use care with these gutters when you are leaning a ladder. Aluminum does not rust, and comes in various thicknesses. Primary aluminum gutters should be used, because secondary aluminum may not be consistent concerning thickness.  Vinyl and plastic gutter systems are another common type. These gutters do not need professional installation, and you can easily cut and install these gutter systems yourself. These gutters are very reliable, offer excellent roof drainage, and will not rot or rust. Vinyl and plastic gutters are also relatively cheap, and cost much less than wood or metal gutter types. These gutter systems can become brittle though, especially if they are exposed to extreme cold or if they are old.

Steel gutters are also a popular choice with homeowners, and these gutter systems can offer you many benefits. There are two types of steel that can be used, stainless steel or galvanized steel, and each type has advantages and drawbacks. Galvanized steel is the cheapest of the two types, but this steel can rust. stainless steel, on the other hand, will not rust and will stay shiny for years without dulling.
Steel gutter systems are chosen because they are strong, unlike aluminum or copper, and can withstand pressure and some abuse without any problems.

No matter which
type of gutter system you choose for your home, make sure your gutters are inspected and cleaned at least once a year. Without a good gutter system, roof drainage may not flow in the right direction to keep your home protected against leaks and water damage. After some time, water that is built up on the roof because of inadequate drainage may seep under the shingles and get into the walls and attic areas of your home, which can end up being very expensive to repair. This can also contribute to mold growth, including toxic molds, and this can be a big problem once it starts.
